is not an easy feat to churn out episodes for 18 years and still lead in the sitcom genre on television. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has achieved it and how. The characters are now a part of most Indian living rooms, spreading joy across age groups. The gate of Gokuldham Society opened on July 28, 2008, and the audience got to meet the Gada family, the Sodhis, the Bhides, the Hathi family, the Iyers and of course, the Mehtas, along with Popatlal and Abdul. Each character has its own fanbase, but the harmless banter between scientist Krishnan Iyer and businessman Jethalal Gada over the former’s wife, Babita, is nothing but iconic.

Tanuj Mahashabde calls Iyer-Babita-Jethalal trio iconic

In an exclusive interview ahead of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’s 18th anniversary, Tanuj Mahashabde, who plays Krishnan Iyer, agreed that the trio is iconic. He explained that a lot of hard work goes into creating those scenes and making the audience laugh. Talking to Zoom, Tanuj said, “Yeh trio hit hone ka kaaran hai. Yeh ek vyakti hai jisko ek mahila pasand hai aur uska husband handsome nahi intelligent hai. Hum koshish karte hain ki isse hasaya jaye. Babita (Munmun Dutta) ka joh beauty hai, voh uske paas hai. Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) ka effort top-class ka hai. Ismein mujhe ek negative part bhi dekhna hai aur positive part bhi dekhna hai.”(Translation: There is a reason why this trio is iconic. There is this man who admires a woman, whose husband is not handsome but intelligent. We try to make people laugh with their banter. Babita has her beauty, and Jethalal leaves no effort to complement her. In this, I have to balance negative as well as positive elements.)

He further explained, “Jab Jethalal Babita ke saath baat karte hai, Iyer ko humesha doubt rehta hai. Iss comedy ko humne itna jama ke rakha hai 18 saalon tak ki logon ko har baar fresh lagta hai. Hum ispe bohot mehnat karte hain, isiliye iconic bani hai.”(Translation: When Jethalal talks to Babita, Iyer is always looking at him suspiciously. We fit comedy here, and even after 18 years, it feels fresh. We work really hard on it, and that’s why it is iconic.)
