fans have been waiting years for an update on Shang-Chi 2, and director Destin Daniel Cretton has now provided one. Since the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021, details about the sequel have remained scarce, leading to growing speculation about its status within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During a recent podcast appearance, Cretton confirmed that the follow-up is still moving forward and shed light on the challenges that have contributed to its lengthy development process. His comments provide a clear idea as to why the project took longer than many had expected.
Shang-Chi 2's delay explained
Shang-Chi 2 was announced in December 2021 and director Destin Daniel Cretton was ready to return to write and direct the sequel following the success of the first film. However, the film faced delays. Now, the director has finally addressed nearly 5-year long delay for Shang-Chi 2, assuring fans that the sequel remains in active development at Marvel Studios despite years of little movement.Speaking on
Deadline's Crew Call podcast alongside Wonder Man co-creator Andrew Guest, Cretton confirmed that work on the follow-up to 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is ongoing. "We are developing a second one," Cretton said during the conversation. The filmmaker explained that the timing of the original movie's release played a major role in slowing momentum for a sequel. Although Shang-Chi was considered a success, it arrived during a challenging period for the global theatrical business as the industry continued to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It was successful, but it actually came out weirdly," Cretton said. He noted that many international markets were still struggling with restrictions when the movie debuted in September 2021. "Many countries were completely shut down to theaters at the time," the director added. According to Cretton, the aftermath of the pandemic created significant disruption across Hollywood, affecting development schedules and priorities throughout the industry."After that, there were just crazy changes all over the place," he said, describing the delay as largely "a result of the industry" adapting to unprecedented circumstances.
