and actress IU, who was recently seen in Perfect Crown, after her hit K-drama When Life Gives You Tangerines, is taking her legal fight against online defamation to a cross-border legal procedure to find an anonymous social media user accused of repeatedly spreading false information about her. Her agency, EDAM Entertainment, confirmed on July 20 that it has requested a US court to seek evidence from Meta, the parent company of Threads and Instagram, to disclose the identity of the person behind the posts. The move is part of the agency's increasingly tough stance on online harassment, following years of legal action against malicious commenters.

US legal request confirmed by agency

According to OSEAN, EDAM Entertainment said the lawsuit was filed to gain identifying information of an account that reportedly posted dozens of defamatory messages against IU. The evidence is expected to be used in criminal proceedings in South Korea.Meta is based in the United States, so the agency sought help from a U.S. federal court to obtain records that could identify the user, such as account information, email address, phone number, IP logs and other available information.

Dozens of allegedly false statements

Reports say the account had posted over 50 posts over several months with false accusations against IU. Allegations included multiple accusations that the singer had copied music, despite past court decisions dismissing similar allegations. Other posts falsely questioned her nationality, alleged ties with Chinese interests and sought to undermine her international popularity by dismissing her overseas achievements.The agency also accused the user of spreading fabricated stories that IU manipulated media coverage and public opinion.

Celebrity death toll

One of the most sensitive allegations was that IU had taken advantage of the late celebs who were close to her. The agency said the anonymous account allegedly claimed that IU used the late Sulli, SHINee member Jonghyun and Kara member Goo Hara for publicity, which the agency said was completely false and deeply disrespectful.The posts also allegedly connected IU's music to national tragedies with no proof, making the alleged defamation even more serious.

Zero-tolerance approach

Previous court cases involving defamatory posts targeting IU have seen fines, suspended prison sentences, orders for compulsory education and civil compensation awarded. The agency has also filed criminal complaints and civil lawsuits against many individuals responsible for abusive online content.

This comes after IU recently remained in the news following her breakup with actor Lee Jong-Suk. On July 10, 2026, the agencies of both artists officially confirmed the end of their four-year relationship. EDAM Entertainment and ACE FACTORY stated the split was amicable, attributing it to their increasingly busy and demanding work schedules, and noted they will remain good colleagues.
