DC
Studios film Supergirl could be hitting digital platforms a lot earlier than anticipated after its lukewarm box office performance. The superhero movie led by actress Milly Alcock, who plays the title role, aka Kara Zor-El, released in theatres on June 26, 2026, and received mixed reviews. Also starring Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa, Supergirl has been directed by Craig Gillespie. The movie, which arrived amid high expectations, failed to leverage its tepid debut. In the midst of this, it's early OTT debut has raised fresh questions about the franchise's commercial viability.
Where to watch Supergirl?
According to ComicBookMovie.com,
Supergirl will land on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) platform on July 28, 2026, a little under a month after its theatrical release. If the reported schedule is accurate, Supergirl will be available to rent or buy digitally through major outlets like Apple TV, Prime Video, Vudu, and Google Play Movies & TV. Warner Bros. is however yet to announce an official date for the digital debut. The film will also be made available via supported digital storefronts, and Indian viewers are also expected to watch it there.
About early digital release
Supergirl has underperformed commercially, hence, the reported early OTT release is not a surprise. In its opening weekend, ithe film debuted to about $38 million in North America and $68 million worldwide. It has gone on to gross more than $100 million globally, even though it is well below expectations for a production that is said to have cost around $170 million.Trade analysts say the movie could close its theatrical run with about $150 million worldwide, which would mean huge financial losses for Warner Bros. The superhero film had a tough fight at the local and international level. One of the major competitors in India was Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty's
Welcome to the Jungle, which opened big with much higher numbers domestically. The movie was also up against another worldwide hit franchise,
Toy Story 5, which continues to draw family audiences, especially younger ones.
Premium screens had higher success
Ticket sales overall have been soft, but
Supergirl has performed particularly well in premium cinema formats. Industry reports say more than half of its domestic opening-weekend box office came from IMAX and other premium large format screens. The IMAX showings overseas brought in an estimated $11 million, one of the bigger premium-format bows in recent superhero slate.
