Tamil filmmaker, actor, and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai on June 27 after suffering a heart attack. He was 73. Known for his remarkable storytelling, sharp dialogues, and rooted middle-class family dramas, Bhagyaraj was one of Tamil cinema’s most influential creative voices. Following his demise, the Tamil Nadu government announced that state honours would be accorded during his final journey. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and leaders from across the politics paid tribute to the iconic filmmaker. Kamal Haasan, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh and others took to social media to grieve the loss.

Following his death, the Tamil Nadu government announced that
Bhagyaraj would be accorded state honours during his final journey. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), under Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, paid tribute to the veteran filmmaker, acknowledging his immense contribution to Indian cinema. In an official statement on X, the CMO expressed deep sorrow and mentioned Bhagyaraj’s multi-faceted talent as a director, actor, screenwriter, dialogue writer, and composer. His post read "I am filled with profound shock and deep sorrow." Bhagyaraj met Vijay along with members of the South Indian Film Writers’ Association in May.
Former Chief Minister MK Stalin also expressed grief, calling Bhagyaraj a towering creative force in Tamil cinema. He praised his unique screenplay style and ability to portray realistic characters with impactful dialogues. Kamal Haasan also mourned his passing, he wrote, "K. Bhagyaraj's Rajan (whom I was introduced to 50 years ago) is no more today. Tamil-speaking our cinema has lost two Rajas within the same month" He referred to the death of K Bhagyaraj's mentor Bharathiraja.
Actor including Venkatesh Daggubati, expressed his grief over Bhagyaraj’s demise, saying he was saddened by the veteran filmmaker’s passing. He mentioned that Bhagyaraj’s work transcended languages and touched the hearts of millions. Venkatesh also said he felt fortunate to have been part of films such as Sundarakanda and Abbaigaru, which were inspired by Bhagyaraj’s remarkable storytelling.
Chiranjeevi expressed shock over Bhagyaraj’s passing, saying he was heartbroken beyond words. He recalled meeting the veteran filmmaker recently in Goa during Kushbu Sundar’s daughter Avantika’s wedding, where they spent time together laughing, sharing jokes, and taking photographs.Raghava Lawrence, Selvaraghavan, and Simran shared heartfelt messages remembering Bhagyaraj’s influence and storytelling brilliance. Many described him as a mentor-like figure whose work transcended language barriers.Bhagyaraj, who began his career under filmmaker Bharathiraja, went on to direct over 25 films and act in more than 75. Classics like Mundhanai Mudichu and Andha 7 Naatkal remain celebrated even today. He is survived by his wife, former actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, and children Shanthanu and Saranya.
