An Intimate Celebration of Words
Every year, Dehradun hosts its much-anticipated literature festival, an event that has steadily grown into a key cultural gathering for the city. Unlike some of the larger, more sprawling literary events in the country, the Dehradun Literature Festival
prides itself on creating an intimate and inclusive space where literature, cinema, and social issues intersect. Established in 2017 by Samraant Virmani, its mission has been to connect the people of Dehradun with leading names in art and culture, fostering a vibrant community of enthusiasts. The focus is on meaningful dialogue, making it a place where attendees can genuinely engage with authors and ideas, rather than just being part of a massive crowd. It’s an event built for connection, celebrated for bringing together diverse voices in a setting known for inspiring writers for generations.
Star-Studded Lineups and Diverse Voices
The festival consistently attracts an impressive roster of speakers. Past editions have welcomed literary giants like Ruskin Bond, who has received a Lifetime Achievement Award here, and Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi. The stage is shared by authors, poets, filmmakers, and scholars, with names like Imtiaz Ali, Vishal Bhardwaj, Nandita Das, Shobhaa De, and former CJI DY Chandrachud gracing the event. The programming is deliberately diverse, covering everything from mythology and mental health to cinema and history. Panels have explored topics ranging from the legacy of Agatha Christie to the enduring relevance of Hindi writer Gaura Pant 'Shivani'. This blend of English and regional literature, including a focus on Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi, ensures a rich and multi-layered conversation.
When and Where to Go
While the headline suggests a July event, the Dehradun Literature Festival has historically taken place in the autumn, typically in October or November. For instance, the 2023 edition was held in late October, and the 2024 and 2025 festivals were scheduled for November. Separately, another major event called the Doon Book Festival, organised by the National Book Trust, took place in April 2026. This nine-day fair at Parade Ground also featured a 'Doon Lit Fest' component with author sessions. For the main Dehradun Literature Festival, the primary venue is often the Doon International School. One of the festival's most appealing features is that it remains a non-ticketed, open-to-all celebration, making it accessible to everyone, especially students.
More Than Just Books
Attending the festival is about more than just author sessions; it's a complete cultural immersion. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Doon Valley, the event creates a unique atmosphere where conversations can flourish. It includes interactive workshops on topics like theatre and creative writing, often led by the guest speakers themselves. The venue comes alive with handicraft stalls, art displays, and bustling book zones. Evenings are often capped off with cultural performances, from folk music to powerhouse concerts by artists like Usha Uthup. This holistic approach aims to create a memorable experience that celebrates the creative spirit in all its forms, making it an ideal getaway for anyone passionate about arts and culture.
