The Tirthan Valley Circuit, Himachal
Often called Himachal's best-kept secret, Tirthan Valley offers a tranquil escape from the commercialised chaos of its neighbours, Kullu and Manali. The road trip here is a journey into nature's lap. The drive from Delhi takes about 11-12 hours to Aut,
the entry point. From the Aut tunnel, you skip the highway to Manali and turn towards Larji, entering a world of pristine forests, charming riverside villages, and the crystal-clear Tirthan river. The main hubs here are Gushaini, Jibhi, and Shoja. Unlike crowded tourist spots, Tirthan focuses on homestays, angling, and exploring the Great Himalayan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive over Jalori Pass to Shoja offers breathtaking views and a sense of true mountain adventure, far from the usual tourist trail.
The Journey to Pabbar Valley, Himachal
If apple orchards, dense deodar forests, and a powerful river cutting through the landscape sounds like your ideal escape, Pabbar Valley is the answer. Located beyond Shimla, this region remains largely untouched by heavy tourism. The drive from Shimla takes you through Rohru, the main town in the valley. What sets this route apart is its authentic Himachali feel; think quiet villages and trails used more by shepherds than tourists. A key highlight is the drive to Chanshal Pass, which sits at over 4,500 metres and offers panoramic views of the Garhwal Himalayas. The valley is a paradise for trekkers and those who enjoy camping by the river, offering activities like trout fishing and exploring ancient temples like Hatkoti. It’s a road trip that rewards you with solitude and raw, unfiltered natural beauty.
The Drive to Munsiyari, Uttarakhand
Known as the 'Gateway to the Johar Valley', Munsiyari in Uttarakhand's Kumaon region is a destination for those who don't mind a long drive for an epic reward. The journey from Delhi is long, often requiring an overnight halt, but it keeps the destination serene and uncrowded. The final stretch of the drive is a thrilling ascent through winding mountain roads. Munsiyari itself offers jaw-dropping, direct views of the Panchachuli peaks, a stunning five-peak range that dominates the skyline. It serves as the base for several high-altitude treks, including the Milam and Ralam Glacier treks. For those not trekking, exploring the village, visiting Birthi Falls, and hiking to Khaliya Top provide more than enough to fill a few days with Himalayan magic.
The Harsil Valley Escape, Uttarakhand
Often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, Gangotri, Harsil is a hidden gem nestled on the banks of the Bhagirathi river. Referred to as the 'mini Switzerland of India' by some, this valley is a picture-perfect hamlet of traditional wooden houses, apple orchards, and dense deodar forests. The road trip to Harsil from Rishikesh or Dehradun is a scenic delight, following the river into the higher Himalayas. While many pilgrims pass through, few stop to explore Harsil's tranquil beauty, making it an ideal uncrowded destination. Key attractions include exploring the cluster of seven lakes known as Sattal, visiting the historic Gartang Gali wooden bridge, and taking peaceful walks through villages like Mukhba and Dharali. In autumn, the valley is awash with the colours of apple harvesting, while winter turns it into a serene, snow-covered paradise.
Chopta and the Tungnath Trail, Uttarakhand
While gaining popularity, Chopta is still far from the madding crowds of Mussoorie and Nainital. Often called the 'Mini Switzerland' of Uttarakhand, it is a region of lush, rolling meadows ('bugyals') set against a backdrop of imposing Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. The drive to Chopta is an escape into the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The main attraction here is the trek to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, and further up to Chandrashila Peak. The trek is relatively accessible and rewards with a 360-degree view of the Garhwal Himalayas. Unlike commercial hill stations, the focus here is on nature, with limited but charming accommodation options that encourage you to disconnect and soak in the serene environment. It’s a perfect blend of spiritual journey and soft adventure.
