A New Model of Ownership
The Bharat Taxi network is a government-backed initiative designed as a driver-owned alternative to private aggregator apps. Instead of high commissions, this cooperative model allows drivers, called 'Sarathis', to become co-owners and shareholders. By
purchasing a share for a nominal fee, drivers gain a stake in the platform, giving them a voice in decision-making and a share in the profits. The core idea is to shift from a system where drivers are service providers to one where they are partners, ensuring that as the platform grows, so do their earnings and stability. This initiative is operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act.
Key Financial Benefits for Drivers
One of the most significant aspects of the cooperative network is its financial structure, which is built to maximize driver income. The platform operates on a zero-commission or low flat-fee model, meaning drivers keep most or all of their earnings from each ride, a stark contrast to the 20-30% commissions often charged by private companies. Under the profit-sharing arrangement, 80% of the cooperative's profits are planned to be distributed among driver-members, with the payout linked to the distance each driver covers. The remaining 20% is reinvested into the cooperative for operations and future expansion, ensuring sustainable growth. This system aims to provide a more predictable and fair income.
Comprehensive Welfare and Social Security
Beyond daily earnings, the cooperative network places a strong emphasis on long-term driver welfare. The model promises a suite of social security benefits that offer a safety net often missing in the gig economy. These benefits include health insurance and accident cover, providing financial protection for drivers and their families in case of medical emergencies. Additionally, the framework includes provisions for retirement savings and pensions, helping drivers plan for their future. Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has stated that the platform was created to improve the economic well-being of drivers and will facilitate access to loans and business expansion support over time.
Expansion and How to Get Involved
The Bharat Taxi network has ambitious expansion plans, aiming to roll out across all cities with municipal corporations within the next few years. The service, which began with pilots, has already launched onboarding initiatives in major hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, and parts of Gujarat, with a growing number of drivers joining the platform. As of late July 2026, over 8.27 lakh drivers had registered on the platform. Drivers interested in joining can typically do so through a dedicated app or at onboarding events organised in various cities. The process involves becoming a member of the cooperative by purchasing a nominal share, which makes you a co-owner of the platform.
