A Digital Watchdog in Your Pocket
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has rolled out a powerful tool for consumers: the 'Food Safety Connect' platform. Available as a mobile app on both Google Play and the Apple App Store, as well as a web portal, it's designed to bring
citizens directly into the fold of national food safety enforcement. The core purpose is to create a responsive system where you can share concerns about food safety violations you encounter. Whether it’s an issue with packaged food, unhygienic conditions at a restaurant, or misleading claims on a label, this platform is your official channel to alert the authorities. Think of it as a direct line to the regulators, turning your awareness into action.
Your First Step: Verify Before You Buy
One of the app's most proactive features is the ability to check the legitimacy of a food business operator (FBO). Every FBO in India, from a local restaurant to a large manufacturer, is required to have a 14-digit FSSAI license or registration number, which should be displayed on their premises and on product packaging. Using the Food Safety Connect app, you can enter this number to instantly verify if the license is active, expired, or suspended. This simple check empowers you to make informed choices, ensuring that the businesses you buy from are compliant with FSSAI's safety and hygiene standards before you even make a purchase. It’s a quick way to gain peace of mind and avoid operators who may be functioning illegally.
How to File a Grievance Effectively
After downloading the app or visiting the web portal, you'll need to register with your mobile number or email. Once logged in, you can start a new complaint. You’ll be asked to provide details about the food business, including its name and address. If you have the 14-digit FSSAI number, entering it is highly beneficial. Next, you select the type of complaint from a list of categories such as food adulteration, expired products, poor hygiene, or misleading advertising. The app then prompts you to describe the issue in detail. After filling out the necessary information and uploading your evidence, you can submit the grievance, which will generate a unique tracking ID.
Evidence Is Everything: The Power of Proof
This is where consumer diligence becomes critical. A complaint without strong evidence is just a claim, but a complaint with clear proof is a catalyst for action. FSSAI explicitly advises users to attach relevant evidence to substantiate their grievance. This includes taking clear photographs or videos of the violation—be it an insect in your food, a dirty kitchen, an expired date on a package, or a misleading label. A copy of the bill is also crucial as it establishes proof of purchase from the specific establishment. The more detailed and accurate your evidence, the easier it is for authorities to verify the complaint and take decisive action. Vague descriptions or blurry photos can hinder the investigation, making your contribution less effective.
What Happens After You Hit 'Submit'?
Once submitted, your complaint isn't sent into a void. The system is designed to automatically forward the grievance to the relevant food safety authority based on the location and nature of the issue. You can use the tracking ID you received to monitor the status and progress of your complaint through the app or portal. Authorities will conduct an investigation based on the information you provided. If the complaint is verified, action can range from penalties to the suspension or cancellation of the FBO's license. FSSAI has also included a feature to 're-raise' a complaint if you are unsatisfied with the resolution, escalating the matter to a higher authority.
