Understanding the NMR Journey
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), often called the 'toy train', is more than just transport; it is a moving heritage experience. The full route spans 46 kilometres from Mettupalayam (MTP) at the foothills to Udagamandalam (UAM), popularly known as Ooty,
at an altitude of 2,203 metres. The journey, which takes about five hours uphill, passes through 16 tunnels, over 250 bridges, and around lush green landscapes, making it one of the most scenic train rides in India. The most popular route is the full journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty, with the section up to Coonoor (ONR) being particularly steep and scenic. There are also shorter, more frequent services between Ooty and Coonoor, which are easier to get tickets for and take about an hour.
The Primary Method: Booking Online
The most reliable way to book your tickets in advance is through the official Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website or its mobile app. Tickets for the NMR, especially for the full Mettupalayam-Ooty route, sell out incredibly fast, often months in advance during peak seasons like summer (April-June) and holidays. It is highly recommended to book at least two to three months ahead of your planned travel date. To book, you'll need to create an account on the IRCTC portal. You can then search for trains using the station codes: MTP for Mettupalayam, UAM for Udagamandalam (Ooty), and ONR for Coonoor. Choosing Your Class and Fare
The NMR offers two main classes: First Class and Second Sitting (2S). First Class provides more comfortable, cushioned seats and is generally less crowded, offering a premium experience with large windows for better views. Second Class features basic wooden or cushioned benches and is more budget-friendly. Fares for the regular service from Mettupalayam to Ooty are approximately ₹600 for First Class and around ₹300 for Second Sitting. For the shorter Coonoor-Ooty leg, expect to pay around ₹160 for Second Class. Note that Southern Railway occasionally revises these fares. During peak tourist seasons, special trains may run with significantly higher fares to manage the rush.
For Last-Minute Planners: Offline and Tatkal Tickets
If you are unable to book online, a limited number of unreserved or general class tickets are sold at the station counters on the day of departure. However, this is a high-risk strategy. For the popular 7:10 AM train from Mettupalayam, you need to arrive at the station extremely early, as queues can form by 4 AM for a small number of available tickets. All members of your group must be present to purchase these tickets. Another option for last-minute travel is the Tatkal Quota, which releases a few seats for booking one day before the train's departure. To maximise your chances of getting a ticket, flexibility is key. If the Mettupalayam to Ooty route is fully booked, check for availability on shorter segments like Coonoor to Ooty, which has more daily services. Also, try searching for dates on weekdays, which tend to have slightly lower demand than weekends and holidays. When booking online, have your passenger details ready to complete the transaction quickly, as seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. For the best views on the uphill journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty, try to get a seat on the right side of the train. For the shorter Coonoor to Ooty trip, the left side offers better valley views.
