Why This Disruption Is Happening
The widespread changes to train schedules are necessary to facilitate a crucial phase of the Chandigarh railway station's redevelopment. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has scheduled a 36-day power and traffic block from September 10 to October
15, 2026. This shutdown is essential for workers to safely erect a new through-roof structure over the platforms and dismantle the old foot-over-bridge girders. This work is part of a large-scale, ₹462-crore project to transform the station into a modern, world-class transit hub with airport-like amenities. While the long-term goal is improved infrastructure and passenger experience, the short-term requires significant operational adjustments.
The Three Main Types of Changes
The disruption isn't a single event but a combination of three different measures affecting hundreds of train trips. First, 12 train services will be cancelled entirely throughout the block period, impacting 442 individual journeys on key routes like Chandigarh-Amritsar and Delhi-Kalka. Second, some long-distance trains will be diverted, bypassing Chandigarh and SAS Nagar (Mohali) altogether by taking an alternate route via Sirhind. Finally, 54 train services will be 'short-terminated' or 'short-originated'. This means trains that previously ran to or from Chandigarh will now start or end their journeys at Ambala Cantonment station. This includes popular services like the Garib Rath to Ajmer and expresses to Udaipur and Ramnagar.
What 'Short-Termination' Means for You
If your train is on the list of short-terminated services, your journey will not begin or end at Chandigarh station. Instead, you will have to deboard or board at Ambala Cantt. Passengers holding tickets to Chandigarh on these trains will need to arrange their own onward travel from Ambala. Similarly, those booked to start their journey from Chandigarh will need to travel to Ambala to catch their train. To ease some of the pressure, Indian Railways has also designated temporary new stops at SAS Nagar (Mohali) for eight long-distance trains, providing another option for some travellers.
Expect Platform Changes and Delays
Even for trains that are still running through Chandigarh, passengers must remain alert. During the 36-day block, a total of 76 trains will berth at different platforms than their usual schedule. This affects premium services, including the Delhi-bound Shatabdi and the Vande Bharat Express, which will see platform changes at various stages of the work. The construction work is divided into three 12-day phases, each targeting different railway lines and platforms within the station, so the specific platform changes will vary. Relying on old platform numbers could cause you to miss your train.

The most reliable sources are the official National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or website, and the Rail Madad helpline at number 139. Pay close attention to whether your train is cancelled, diverted, or short-terminated at Ambala. For cancelled trains, passengers are entitled to a full refund. For diverted trains, check for updated timings, as the new routes may alter schedules. Finally, once at the station, always listen for announcements and check the electronic display boards for the latest platform information before proceeding to board.
