A New Perch in the Sky
Most Earth observation satellites circle the planet in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), getting a close-up but fleeting view of any given area. EOS-05 is different. It was launched into a Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO) at an altitude of nearly 36,000 kilometres.
At this height, the satellite’s speed matches Earth's rotation, allowing it to 'hover' over the Indian subcontinent. This gives it the unique ability to monitor a vast region continuously, a game-changer for tracking rapidly developing events. Where LEO satellites pass over a story, EOS-05 can stay with it, providing a persistent gaze that complements India’s large constellation of remote sensing satellites.
The Technology Onboard
EOS-05 is equipped with sophisticated imagers that can see the Earth in multiple ways. It carries instruments to capture images in multi-spectral and hyper-spectral bands, essentially seeing light beyond what the human eye can perceive. These sensors can monitor everything from visible light to infrared signatures. This allows the satellite to gather diverse types of data day and night. With a reported resolution of 42 metres, it is one of the most powerful cameras ever placed in such a high orbit. This combination of constant watchfulness and detailed imaging provides a powerful stream of data for a wide range of applications.
A Guardian Against Natural Disasters
One of the most critical applications for EOS-05 is disaster management. Its ability to provide near real-time imagery of large areas is invaluable for monitoring natural disasters like cyclones, floods, and forest fires. For example, authorities can track the path and intensity of a cyclone as it approaches the coast, enabling more timely evacuations. In the case of widespread flooding, the satellite can map the extent of the inundated areas, helping rescue teams identify the worst-hit regions and plan relief efforts more effectively. This persistent monitoring can significantly reduce the loss of life and property by providing crucial information when it's needed most.
Boosting India's Farmers and Forests
Beyond disasters, the data from EOS-05 will be a significant boon for India’s agricultural sector. By analyzing spectral data, scientists can assess crop health, detect pest infestations, and monitor soil moisture levels across vast farmlands. This information can help generate advisories for farmers, supporting programs like the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
