Anyone who has travelled overnight on an Indian train knows the struggle of the berth near the entrance. A new design feature in the Vande Bharat Sleeper aims to finally solve this, promising a more peaceful journey for everyone onboard.
The Age-Old Problem of the Entrance Berth
For decades, being
assigned a berth near the main entrance or toilet area in a sleeper coach has been a source of dread for long-distance travellers. These spots are hubs of constant activity. The doors are frequently used, letting in light and noise from the vestibule, especially at night. People congregate, vendors pass through, and the general commotion makes it incredibly difficult for those in nearby berths to get any rest. This common passenger complaint has been a persistent issue across many trains, including premium services like the Rajdhani Express, turning what should be a restful overnight journey into a disturbed and tiring experience.
A Simple Yet Effective Design Solution
The new Vande Bharat Sleeper trains directly address this long-standing issue with a thoughtful change in coach layout. The design introduces a significant gap between the automatic sliding entrance door and the first set of passenger berths. This creates a buffer zone, effectively separating the sleeping area from the high-traffic entrance. A sliding intercommunication door further isolates the passenger saloon from the vestibule. This means the light, noise, and movement from the entrance are significantly reduced before they can reach sleeping passengers, offering a much quieter and more private environment for those in the end berths.
More Than Just a Quieter Corner
This focus on passenger comfort extends throughout the Vande Bharat Sleeper. The entire train is designed to offer a superior travel experience. The coaches feature improved noise insulation and better suspension systems to reduce vibrations and ensure a smoother ride. Berths are wider and have better cushioning compared to previous generations of trains. Furthermore, sensor-based lighting in common areas and individual reading lights for each berth provide convenience without disturbing others. Even the ladders for accessing upper and middle berths have been ergonomically redesigned for easier use.
A New Era of Overnight Travel
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is part of Indian Railways’ broader push to modernise its fleet and elevate the passenger experience. Manufactured by BEML in collaboration with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), these trains are engineered for semi-high-speed travel, capable of reaching speeds up to 160-180 kmph. This allows them to reduce journey times on key long distance routes. Beyond speed, the trains are equipped with advanced safety features like the Kavach anti‑collision system, CCTV surveillance, and fire detection systems. Onboard amenities include bio‑vacuum toilets, multiple charging ports (including USB Type‑A and C), and Wi‑Fi access, bringing overnight rail travel in India to a new global standard.
