Question the Source and Context
A manipulated video rarely exists in a vacuum. One of the quickest ways to verify a clip is to investigate its origin and context. Who posted this video? Is it a reputable news organization or a brand new, anonymous account with no history? Check the account's history for other suspicious posts. Most importantly, pause before reacting. Misinformation often spreads by provoking a strong emotional response—shock, anger, or fear. Before you share, take a moment to perform a simple keyword search. Look for the names of people, places, or the event described in the video on a trusted search engine. If a major event truly happened, credible news outlets will be reporting on it. The absence of corroborating reports is a major warning sign. Sometimes a video is real but used in a misleading context. The clip could be old, from a different location, or edited to remove crucial information.
Use Digital Tools for Deeper Analysis
When your eyes and simple searches aren't enough, it's time to use some digital tools. A reverse image search is a powerful technique. Take screenshots of several key frames in the video—especially clear, distinctive moments—and upload them to services like Google Lens or TinEye. This can help you find the original source of the video, see if it has been published before in a different context, or find fact-checks that have already been written about it. Many social media platforms are also starting to label content that is identified as AI-generated. Look for labels like "Altered or synthetic content" on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. While creators are required to disclose this, many don't, so the absence of a label isn't proof of authenticity.
Leverage Dedicated AI Detection Platforms
For a more technical analysis, you can use specialised AI detection tools. A growing number of platforms are available, some designed for professional journalists and others for the general public. Services like Hive Detect allow you to upload a file or paste a URL to check for signs of AI manipulation. Other options include tools from companies like Reality Defender, Sensity AI, and Deepware Scanner. These platforms use advanced algorithms to analyze everything from facial inconsistencies and audio artifacts to the hidden data within the video file itself to spot signs of tampering. While no detector is 100% perfect, especially on low-quality or heavily compressed videos, they provide an excellent additional data point to help you make an informed judgment about a video's authenticity.
