The festive season is in full swing, but this year, the Indian shopper is rewriting the rules. While the spirit of celebration remains strong, a new trend of deliberate, value-conscious spending is taking hold across the country.
The Smart, Not Spendy, Shopper
This festive season isn't
about cutting back entirely; it's about being smarter with budgets. According to a YouGov India Festive Shopping Report from 2026, the most common approach isn't to spend less but to shop more carefully. About a quarter of consumers plan to stick to their usual budget but be more deliberate with their choices. This means shoppers are actively looking for ways to make their money go further without simply retreating from the market. Price comparison is a key strategy, with 45% of shoppers identifying as 'price comparers' who hunt for discounts before buying. This shift indicates a more mature consumer who balances festive traditions with financial prudence.
Value Is More Than Just a Discount
While discounts and offers are a major influence for nearly half of all shoppers, the definition of 'value' is expanding. For many, quality now trumps price. A YouGov survey found that 49% of consumers prioritize product quality first, with the price tag coming in second at 42%. This trend is visible in big-ticket categories like gold, where shoppers are adapting to high prices by opting for smaller, lightweight items or trading in old jewellery rather than skipping the purchase altogether. This behaviour, termed the 'compressed purchase', shows a commitment to tradition while making practical financial choices. Convenience and a seamless shopping experience are also crucial, cited by 38% of consumers as a key factor.
Digital and Physical Worlds Collide
The festive shopping journey is no longer confined to one channel. Three-quarters of shoppers use a mix of online and offline stores, blending digital discovery with in-person experience. While online sales are projected to cross ₹1.5 lakh crore this year, physical retail remains central to the festive ritual. Shoppers are using AI to research products and compare deals, and digital payments are preferred by over 80% of consumers. This hybrid approach allows consumers to take advantage of online-only deals while still enjoying the touch-and-feel experience of local stores, truly maximizing their options.
Personal Indulgence and Gifting
While family remains at the heart of festive gifting, a notable trend is the rise of self_gifting. Many shoppers, particularly among the younger generations like Gen Z, are balancing social expectations with personal desires, buying presents for themselves as a form of reward. This adds a new dimension to festive consumption. Fashion, footwear, and accessories remain the most popular spending category, with 72% of households planning to buy from it. However, spending is highly focused, with the average shopper planning to increase their budget in just one or two specific categories, primarily apparel, jewellery, electronics, or home goods.
A Shift Towards Conscious Choices
Beyond budgets, a subtle shift towards more conscious consumption is underway. There's growing dissatisfaction with overly commercialised public events, leading some to prefer smaller, community_funded neighbourhood gatherings. In fashion, there's significant search interest in 'outfit restyling', with shoppers looking for ways to create new looks with affordable pieces and existing wardrobe items rather than buying entirely new outfits. This move towards sustainability and resourcefulness shows that maximizing value isn't just about money; it's also about making thoughtful choices that align with personal values.
