A Golden Addition to the City of Gold
Dubai is preparing to launch what is being billed as the world's first and longest walkway made of 24-carat gold. According to officials, the project is scheduled to be unveiled within the next two months in the Dubai Gold District, an area in Deira that
serves as a major hub for jewellery trade. Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District, stated that the attraction will allow visitors to experience walking along a literal golden path, further enhancing the city's reputation as a global destination for gold and luxury tourism. The announcement coincides with another record-breaking achievement in the district: the unveiling of the world's heaviest and largest pair of gold earrings, a traditional 'jhumka' design weighing over 16 kilograms.
More Than Just a Tourist Attraction
The gold walkway is part of a broader strategy to bolster Dubai's status as a central hub for the global gold industry. The Dubai Gold District, which was officially launched in January 2026, consolidates retail, wholesale, and bullion trading into a single purpose-built destination. The new attraction is designed to draw more foot traffic to the area and support an ambitious plan to host the largest gold and jewellery exhibition in the Middle East. The district has already seen significant growth in 2026, with a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new retail shops for jewellery and luxury watches, according to Al Harmoudi.
A Pattern of Unprecedented Projects
A golden walkway fits perfectly within Dubai's well-established pattern of creating audacious, record-breaking structures that capture global attention. The city is already home to the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, and is developing several other mega-projects. These include the Burj Azizi, set to be the world's second-tallest tower; the Burj Binghatti, which will be the tallest residential tower; and the redesigned Dubai Creek Tower. This strategy of building 'world's firsts' is a core component of Dubai's economic model, using architectural spectacle to drive tourism, attract investment, and build a powerful global brand. These projects are not merely about luxury for its own sake; they are calculated economic engines.
The Symbolism of Gold in Dubai
Gold is deeply woven into the cultural and economic fabric of Dubai. Beyond its market value, gold symbolises wealth, tradition, and status in the region. The city's famous Gold Souk has been a major draw for decades, but the use of gold has expanded into nearly every facet of its luxury offerings. From gold-plated interiors in iconic hotels like the Burj Al Arab to gold-infused cappuccinos, the precious metal is a recurring motif in the city's aesthetic. This fearless and unapologetic use of gold in design and lifestyle has even influenced global trends, helping to bring metallic finishes back into mainstream contemporary design. The new walkway is the latest and perhaps most direct expression of this longstanding love affair with gold.
