The Key Finding: Experience Over Ownership
A major 2026 survey on intercity mobility has confirmed what many travellers already felt: the journey matters as much as the destination. According to the IntrCity SmartBus survey, which polled over 13,300 people, shared mobility is no longer just a budget
alternative but a preferred mode of travel. A staggering 76.3% of travellers expect to increase their use of shared transport like buses over the next three years. Perhaps the most telling statistic is that even when costs are identical for a 400-600 km journey, nearly 70% of travellers would choose a premium shared bus over a personal car, train, or even a flight. This shift is largely driven by young, salaried professionals aged 18-43, who value a comfortable, stress-free experience over the hassle of driving.
From 'How Much?' to 'What For?'
The narrative around bus travel is changing from a singular focus on cost to a broader consideration of value. While affordability remains important, more than 71% of respondents said they are willing to pay more for services that offer better safety, comfort, and reliability. This signals the rise of a value-conscious traveller who evaluates the overall experience rather than just the ticket price. The preference for AC buses, which now account for over 70% of journeys, and sleeper or semi-sleeper coaches for long routes underscores this trend. Passengers are making a clear choice: a slightly higher fare is a worthy investment for a good night's sleep, cleaner amenities, and peace of mind.
The Modern Long-Haul Wishlist
So, what exactly do passengers expect on these long routes? The demands have become more sophisticated. Safety is the top priority for 43% of travellers, followed closely by affordability and then comfort and cleanliness. However, 'comfort' itself has expanded in meaning. It's no longer just about a reclining seat. Surveys consistently show a high demand for specific amenities that make a long journey bearable, even enjoyable. An on-board washroom is a priority for about 65% of travellers, and GPS tracking for live updates is preferred by 60%. Other essentials include functioning AC, available charging points, and reliable Wi-Fi. These features are no longer seen as luxuries but as standard components of a quality bus service.
Technology Takes the Wheel
The entire travel experience, from booking to arrival, is being reshaped by technology. An overwhelming 82.4% of passengers consider technology very important to their journey. The uncertainty of old-school bus travel—long queues, unclear boarding points, and last-minute delays—is being replaced by the predictability of digital platforms. The ability to easily book tickets online, select seats, and get real-time updates are key reasons for the growing preference for organised bus services. This digital shift is also what gives travellers confidence, as they can check reviews, verify operator credentials, and track their bus, all from their smartphone.
The Road Ahead for Bus Operators
These evolving expectations present a clear directive to bus operators: compete on experience, not just price. The findings indicate that while safety concerns remain a hurdle for about a third of potential passengers, a focus on providing a secure, clean, and comfortable environment can win loyalty. Companies that invest in better fleets, professional crew, and tech-driven features like live tracking and seamless booking are poised to capture this growing market. The success of premium bus services shows that there is a significant segment of the population ready to embrace long-haul bus travel, provided it meets their standards for quality and reliability. As travellers increasingly opt to leave their cars at home, the opportunity for growth in the shared mobility sector is immense.
