The Free 48-Hour Transit Visa
The most straightforward way for an Indian passport holder to get a free UAE visa is by taking advantage of the 48-hour transit visa. This option is perfect for travellers with a layover in the UAE who want to turn a short stop into a mini-vacation. If
your flight connects through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or another UAE airport, you can leave the terminal and explore the city for up to two days at no visa cost. The key condition is that you must be travelling to a third country; your journey cannot be a simple return trip to India. This visa is single-entry and cannot be extended. To get it, you must apply in advance through a UAE-based airline like Emirates, Etihad, or Air Arabia when you book your flights.
The Paid 96-Hour Transit Visa
If two days isn't quite enough to see the sights, you can opt for a 96-hour transit visa. While not free, it is a very affordable option for a longer layover, allowing you to stay in the UAE for up to four days. The fee for this visa is approximately AED 50 (around ₹1,162). Similar to its 48-hour counterpart, this visa is also single-entry, non-extendable, and must be arranged before you travel through your UAE-based airline. You will need to present a confirmed ticket for your onward journey to a third destination. This is an excellent choice for travellers who want a more substantial taste of what the UAE has to offer without committing to a full tourist visa.
Visa on Arrival for Certain Travellers
There is another highly convenient, though not free, option for some Indian citizens. If you hold an ordinary Indian passport that is valid for at least six months and also possess a valid visa or residence permit from specific countries, you can get a 14-day visa on arrival. The eligible permits include a US visa (like a B1/B2) or Green Card, a UK residence permit, or an EU residence permit. This facility has also been expanded to include residence permits from countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea. This visa costs a fee upon arrival, typically around USD 63 or AED 100, and allows you to stay for 14 days. It can usually be extended once for another 14 days for an additional fee.
A Special Offer for Abu Dhabi Tourists
In a recent tourism push, Abu Dhabi has introduced a special program that covers the visa costs for Indian tourists. This initiative runs from August 1 to October 31, 2026, and is limited to the first 20,000 eligible bookings. To qualify for this free visa, Indian passport holders must book a package through a participating travel partner that includes a stay of at least three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel and a return flight from India. This is not a visa-free entry policy but a promotion where the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi covers the visa fee for qualifying holiday packages. This is a great opportunity for those planning a dedicated holiday in the capital.
Essential Documents and Key Reminders
Regardless of the visa type, having the correct documents is crucial. You will always need a passport with at least six months of validity from your date of entry. For transit visas, a confirmed onward ticket is mandatory. For the visa on arrival, you must carry your passport and the valid visa or residence permit from the qualifying country. Always apply for transit visas before your departure, as they are not available on arrival for Indians. It's also a good practice to carry a clear, colour copy of your passport's bio-data page and a recent passport-sized photograph with a white background.
