A new chapter in Indian railway travel has begun. The much-awaited Vande Bharat sleeper service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai was flagged off on November 1, promising to transform the overnight journey between India's tech hub and its financial capital.
A Game-Changer for Connectivity
The launch of the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper marks a significant milestone in connecting two of India's most vital economic centres. For years, travellers have sought faster, more comfortable alternatives for the overnight journey. This service, the first Vande Bharat sleeper in southern India, is the answer to that demand. It is expected to slash travel time to approximately 16 hours, a remarkable improvement over the 22 to 24 hours taken by existing direct trains. By providing a time-efficient and comfortable overnight option, the train is poised to become a preferred choice for business and leisure travellers, directly competing with buses and even some flights.
Inside the State-of-the-Art Coaches
The Vande Bharat sleeper is designed with passenger comfort as its core principle. The 16-coach train features a three-class configuration: AC First, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier, with a total capacity of 823 berths. The interiors are a significant upgrade from conventional trains, featuring ergonomically designed, broader, and better-cushioned berths to ensure a restful night's sleep. Passengers can expect modern amenities such as personal reading lights, USB charging ports, and advanced bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps. Enhanced safety is another key focus, with CCTV cameras in all coaches, an automatic fire detection system, and the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system.
The Overnight Advantage: Schedule and Route
The service is tailored for the quintessential overnight traveller. According to the regular schedule, train number 27652 will depart from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and arrive at CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 AM the next day. The return journey, train number 27651, will leave Mumbai at 8:10 PM and reach Bengaluru at noon the following day. The train will operate six days a week, excluding Mondays from Bengaluru and Tuesdays from Mumbai. Key stops along the route include Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Guntakal, enhancing connectivity for several important towns between the two metropolises.
A Premium, Not Pricey, Alternative
While offering a premium experience, the Vande Bharat sleeper is positioned to be a competitive travel option. Indicative fares, which may vary based on dynamic pricing, are expected to be around ₹2,600 for AC 3-Tier and up to ₹4,250 for First AC. This pricing makes it an attractive alternative to last-minute flights, especially when considering the time and cost associated with airport travel. The fare structure is designed to be slightly higher than existing premium trains like the Rajdhani Express, reflecting the superior speed and modern amenities on offer. However, unlike other trains, there will be no provision for Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) tickets, with bookings only available for confirmed berths.
More Than Just a Faster Train
The introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it represents a new philosophy in long distance travel. The ability to board a train in the evening and arrive fresh and ready for the day in another major city without the hassle of airport security and check ins is a powerful value proposition. The train s aerodynamic design, capable of speeds up to $160$ km/h , and advanced suspension system ensure a smoother , quieter journey with minimal jerks and vibrations. This focus on a holistic travel experience—combining speed , comfort , and convenience—sets a new benchmark for Indian Railways and signals a bright future for overnight train travel across the country.
