From Pet Owner to Pet Parent
The weekend landscape in urban India is changing, one paw at a time. The familiar sight of leaving pets behind is being replaced by a new, shared experience. This shift is driven by a profound change in how people view their animal companions. The term
'pet owner' is increasingly making way for 'pet parent', a phrase that captures the deep emotional bond and sense of responsibility many feel. This cultural evolution, known as pet humanization, means pets are now seen as integral family members who deserve to be part of daily activities, including leisure and travel. As a result, a whole new ecosystem of services and experiences designed around pets has emerged, transforming weekends from a time of separation to a time of shared adventure.
The Boom in Pet-Friendly Spaces
This new demand has sparked a business boom. Cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune are now dotted with pet-friendly cafes where you can sip your coffee with your canine by your side. Some establishments, like Puppychino in Delhi and TherPUP in Bengaluru, go a step further, offering dedicated play areas and even special menus for dogs. The hospitality industry has also taken note. What was once a niche market has become a significant trend, with an increasing number of hotels, homestays, and resorts not just tolerating pets but actively welcoming them with special amenities like pet beds, walking services, and dedicated play zones. This has opened up a world of travel, from beach getaways in Goa to mountain retreats in Manali.
Why Is This Happening Now?
Several social and economic factors are fuelling this trend. Rising disposable incomes and the growth of nuclear families in urban centres mean more people have the financial capacity and the emotional need for companionship that pets provide. For many millennials and Gen Z, who are often delaying marriage and children, pets fill a crucial emotional space, becoming the centre of their domestic lives. This generation of pet parents is more informed and willing to spend on high-quality products and experiences that enhance their pets' well-being and happiness. The Indian pet care market itself is a testament to this, with projections showing it growing at a remarkable rate, reflecting increased spending not just on food, but on services, grooming, and accessories.
Pawcations: The New Family Holiday
The concept of a 'pawcation'—a vacation planned around the needs of a pet—is gaining serious traction. Destinations are no longer chosen just for human comfort but for their suitability for four-legged family members. This includes open spaces, pet-friendly activities, and accommodating stays. Hill stations like Coorg and Ooty offer pleasant weather and scenic trails for walks, while coastal towns like Pondicherry and parts of Goa provide relaxed beachside experiences. This has led to the rise of specialised pet travel planners and online resources dedicated to helping pet parents navigate the logistics of a trip, from finding the right resort to understanding transport regulations.
The Ruff-Realities and Roadblocks
Despite the progress, India is still more 'pet-tolerant' than universally 'pet-friendly'. Travelling with a pet comes with its own set of challenges. Public transport remains a major hurdle, with train and air travel involving complex rules, paperwork like vaccination records and fitness certificates, and anxiety for both pet and parent. Many hotels still have restrictions on the size or breed of dogs, and finding truly welcoming spaces in smaller towns can be difficult. Furthermore, not all public spaces are equipped for pets, and concerns about hygiene and the comfort of other patrons are valid challenges that businesses must navigate.
