A New Era for Northeast Travel
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express between New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and Guwahati marked a significant milestone as the first of its kind for Northeast India. Inaugurated in May 2023, this semi-high-speed train has become a cornerstone of the region's
transportation network, embodying the larger push towards modernising Indian Railways. It serves as a prime example of the government's 'Act East Policy', which focuses on enhancing infrastructure and integration in the northeastern states. By providing a faster, more reliable travel option, the train has begun to reshape the economic and social landscape, connecting the gateway of the Northeast, NJP, with Assam’s commercial hub, Guwahati. This service is a tangible result of increased budgetary focus on railway development in the region, which has seen funding increase more than fivefold over the last decade, enabling long-pending projects to finally reach completion.
The Journey: Faster and Smarter
Covering the 409-kilometre distance in just 5 hours and 30 minutes, the NJP-Guwahati Vande Bharat is the fastest train on this crucial route. This represents a significant time saving of at least an hour compared to the next fastest service, a crucial improvement for business travellers, tourists, and families alike. The train, numbered 22227 from NJP to Guwahati and 22228 for the return journey, operates six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. Its key stops include New Alipurduar, Kokrajhar, New Bongaigaon, and Kamakhya, providing vital connectivity to several important towns along the way. The morning departure from NJP at 6:10 AM and arrival in Guwahati before noon at 11:40 AM, with a return journey in the evening, makes it a convenient option for a day's work or a quick trip.
Onboard the Future of Rail
The Vande Bharat experience is a world away from conventional train travel. As an indigenously manufactured train, it showcases India's engineering capabilities. The train is engineless, using a distributed power system like metro trains for faster acceleration and deceleration. Passengers travel in fully air-conditioned comfort, with options for AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car. The coaches are equipped with automatic doors, large windows for scenic views, and GPS-based passenger information systems. For convenience, there is on-board Wi-Fi, personal reading lights, and charging points at every seat. In the Executive Class, rotating seats allow passengers to face the direction of travel or turn towards the window. Safety is also a top priority, with the train being fitted with the 'Kavach' automatic train protection system to prevent collisions.
More Than Just One Train
The NJP-Guwahati Vande Bharat is a flagship project within a much larger wave of railway infrastructure upgrades transforming the Northeast. For years, the region contended with a fragmented meter-gauge network and underfunded projects. Today, the entire network is broad-gauge, and a record budget allocation is fuelling unprecedented expansion. Projects worth over ₹77,000 crores are currently underway, aiming to connect all state capitals of the region to the national rail grid. States like Mizoram and Meghalaya have seen the inauguration of their first major railway lines, finally linking cities like Aizawl to the rest of the country. This massive investment is not just about laying tracks; it includes widespread electrification, doubling of lines, and constructing new stations, bridges, and tunnels through challenging terrain to create a modern, efficient, and integrated railway system for the entire northeastern frontier.
