For instance, major firms like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are increasingly using outcome-based pricing, a model where fees are tied to performance metrics, a change accelerated by AI's integration. This shift means productivity is no longer just about speed but about delivering tangible business value, with AI handling the grunt work while humans focus on higher-level strategy. Reports suggest AI can unlock a 10-20% improvement in productivity across the software development lifecycle.
A Pivot in Career Paths, Not an End
The narrative of 'AI replacing jobs' is proving to be too simplistic. While some roles focused on repetitive tasks are diminishing, a wave of new, specialized roles is emerging. The World Economic Forum has projected that while AI could displace millions of jobs, it will also create even more new ones. In India, demand is surging for professionals like AI Engineers, Machine Learning Specialists, GenAI Architects, and even AI Ethics Specialists. This doesn't mean the traditional IT professional is obsolete. Rather, their career path is evolving. The job of a developer, for example, is shifting from writing every line of code to orchestrating AI tools, understanding system architecture, and solving complex business problems. The industry is witnessing a clear evolution, not an overnight replacement of its workforce.
From Raw Code to Strategic Counsel
The skills that define a successful IT professional are changing rapidly. Pure technical prowess, while still important, is no longer enough. As AI tools handle more of the foundational coding and data analysis, the premium is shifting to 'human-centric' skills. These include critical thinking, creative problem-solving, strategic planning, and understanding business context. According to a NASSCOM report, a significant majority of employers report that AI has redefined job roles and responsibilities within their organizations. This has led to a rise in skills-based hiring, where demonstrable abilities and certifications in AI are often valued more than traditional degrees. The ideal employee is now one who can collaborate with AI, using it as a powerful tool to build innovative solutions and provide strategic advice to clients, effectively becoming a tech consultant rather than just a coder.
The Great Reskilling Mandate
India's top IT firms are not standing by passively; they are proactively investing billions to future-proof their workforce. Companies like Infosys, TCS, and Wipro have launched massive internal reskilling initiatives. Infosys has already trained over 275,000 employees in AI and related skills and has committed to hiring fresh graduates with a focus on this new reality. Similarly, Wipro aims to provide digital and AI skills to one million college students by 2030 through programs that bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry needs. These initiatives are creating what NASSCOM calls 'Human + AI' teams, where human expertise is augmented, not replaced, by artificial intelligence. This widespread upskilling is seen as essential not just for employee retention, but for maintaining India's competitive advantage as a global tech leader.
