The Science of Skimping on Sleep
Recent findings from a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine provide a clear picture of what happens when our sleep schedule is consistently cut short. Researchers from Columbia University studied 95 adults who typically slept a healthy seven
to eight hours per night. The study was split into two six-week phases: one where participants maintained their normal sleep, and another where they were instructed to delay their bedtime by 90 minutes, resulting in about 80 minutes less sleep each night. The results were modest but clear: during the sleep-restricted period, participants gained an average of one pound (about 0.45 kg). While one pound might not sound alarming, study author Faris Zuraikat noted that this occurred in just six weeks. When extrapolated over a year, this pattern could lead to more significant weight gain.
From Tired to Sedentary
The connection wasn't just on the scale; it was also in how participants spent their waking hours. The study found that losing sleep led to a more sedentary lifestyle. On average, participants spent an extra 17 minutes per day being inactive during the sleep-restricted phase. This increase in sedentary time was even more pronounced for men and postmenopausal women, who were inactive for nearly 30 additional minutes daily. It’s an intuitive link: when you’re tired, you’re less likely to have the energy for physical activity, whether that’s a planned workout or just general daily movement. The researchers highlighted that even after accounting for the extra time participants were awake, they were still less active, pointing to fatigue as a powerful force dictating our daily activity levels.
More Than Just a Matter of Willpower
It’s easy to think that weight gain is simply about eating more and moving less, but sleep deprivation affects the very biology that governs these behaviours. Previous research has shown that insufficient sleep can disrupt the hormones that regulate appetite. Ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates hunger, can increase, while leptin, which signals fullness, can decrease. Though this particular study didn't find significant changes in these specific hormones, the link is well-established in broader sleep science. Furthermore, other analyses involving the same participants found that mild sleep restriction increased insulin resistance, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, especially in women with higher cardiometabolic risk. It suggests a complex cascade of effects where less sleep makes the body less efficient and more prone to storing energy.
How to Reclaim Your Rest
The findings underscore that prioritising sleep is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle, just as important as diet and exercise. If you're struggling to get the recommended seven to nine hours, focusing on sleep hygiene can make a significant difference. Start by establishing a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends, to regulate your body's internal clock. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, or listening to calming music to signal to your body that it's time to wind down. Optimise your bedroom environment by making it dark, quiet, and cool. Finally, be mindful of caffeine and alcohol intake, especially in the hours leading up to bedtime, as both can interfere with sleep quality. Even small, consistent changes can help you move from being chronically sleep-deprived to well-rested.
