A Quantum Leap in Capacity
Indian Railways has started a phased rollout of a next-generation Passenger Reservation System (PRS) designed to handle a vastly larger volume of traffic. The headline figure is staggering: the new system is built to process over 40 lakh (four million)
enquiries per minute. This represents a tenfold increase from the previous system's capacity of around 4 lakh enquiries per minute. This upgrade, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), marks one of the most significant modernizations of the railway booking infrastructure in its nearly 40-year history. The rollout, which began in August 2026, is being done in stages to ensure a stable transition with minimal disruption.
Enquiries vs. Bookings: An Important Distinction
It is crucial for travellers to understand what 'enquiries' means. An enquiry is any instance of checking information, such as seat availability, train routes, PNR status, or fare details. It is not the same as a confirmed ticket booking. However, the capacity for bookings has also seen a monumental jump. The upgraded PRS will be able to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly fivefold increase from the previous capacity of about 32,000 bookings per minute. This dual enhancement of both enquiry and booking capacity is designed to make the entire ticketing process smoother, from initial search to final payment.

The Technology Driving the Change
This upgrade is more than just a website redesign; it's a complete overhaul of the core engine that has powered railway reservations for decades. The new PRS is moving away from older platforms to a modern, cloud-based infrastructure. This allows for greater flexibility and the ability to scale resources dynamically based on demand. CRIS is integrating technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve services further, with potential applications in predicting train delays and waitlist confirmation chances. The new system will also feature a multilingual interface, making it more accessible to passengers across India.
A System for the Future
The need for this overhaul is driven by the massive shift to digital ticketing. Between June 2025 and June 2026, nearly 89% of the 65 crore reserved tickets were booked online. This trend highlighted the limitations of the older system, which was first introduced in 1986 and has been evolving ever since. The new IRCTC beta website, which went live in July 2026, is part of this transition, and early results have already shown an improvement in the speed of Tatkal bookings. By investing in this next-generation PRS, Indian Railways is building a foundation to support the growing needs of millions of passengers and the increasing reliance on digital services for years to come.
