A Tale of Two Kitchens
During a recent appearance on 'The Great Indian Kapil Show', Kareena Kapoor Khan, alongside her husband Saif Ali Khan, playfully revealed the stark differences between the Kapoor and Pataudi family palates. Looking at Saif, she shared, “Lauki (bottle
gourd) is your favourite vegetable too.” After a moment of hesitation, Saif admitted, “Yes, but I don't like saying it.” This prompted Kareena to elaborate on the culinary divide. “The full Pataudi family with Amma (Sharmila Tagore), Soha, Saba, Sara, and Saif… they get lauki cooked every time,” she explained. She then contrasted this with her own family's preferences with a laugh, stating, “Hum paaya khaane wale hai yaar (We are people who eat mutton paya)… I love my pizzas. Kapoors and Pataudis are on the opposite ends. They are too healthy. We are too unhealthy.”
The Legendary Kapoor Spread
The Kapoor family's love for food is the stuff of Bollywood legend. Their gatherings are famously centered around hearty, flavour-packed meals that reflect their Punjabi roots. It’s a world of rich gravies, succulent meats, and unapologetic indulgence. In a past interview, Kareena confirmed this, revealing that food is a huge topic of discussion in her family. She even named the one dish that unites the entire clan: paya, a rich and aromatic slow-cooked mutton trotter curry. Her recent comments about loving pizza and being from a family that eats paya perfectly aligns with this well-documented foodie legacy. It paints a picture of a boisterous, passionate family where love is expressed through generous helpings and shared meals, reminiscent of, in her own words, 'big Italian families'.
The Refined Pataudi Palate
On the other side of the spectrum is the Pataudi household, which, according to Kareena, leans towards much healthier and simpler fare. Her mention of lauki being a staple for the entire family, from matriarch Sharmila Tagore to the younger generation like Sara Ali Khan, paints a picture of disciplined and health-conscious eating. This preference for lighter meals, such as simply cooked vegetables, suggests a dining culture that is perhaps more restrained and subtle compared to the robust flavours of the Kapoor table. Saif Ali Khan's reluctance to admit his fondness for lauki adds a humorous, relatable touch, hinting that even a Nawab appreciates the simple, if unglamorous, comforts of a healthy vegetable. It speaks to a different kind of food tradition, one rooted in wellness and understated elegance.
Kareena's Balanced Approach
Caught between these two culinary worlds, Kareena has famously carved her own path. She is as well known for her disciplined fitness regimen as she is for her love of food. Over the years, guided by her nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, she has championed the cause of eating simple, home-cooked Indian meals. She has often spoken about her love for comfort foods like dal-chawal, khichdi, and parathas with white butter. Yet, she also openly admits to her cravings for pizza and burgers, which she enjoys as cheat meals. Her philosophy seems to be one of balance rather than deprivation. She proves that one can enjoy a cheesy slice of pizza while also appreciating the gut-friendly benefits of lauki, which she herself has called a 'superpower vegetable'. This approach allows her to honour both her Kapoor heritage of indulgence and her Pataudi family's commitment to health.
