The beach is perfect for long walks, witnessing local fishermen, and enjoying the creations of sand artists. A weekend here offers a unique mix of spiritual energy and seaside relaxation. Getting there is simple, with the 60-kilometre journey from Bhubaneswar taking just over an hour by train or car. Frequent buses are also a cheap and convenient option. For a quieter experience, head towards the eastern end of the beach, away from the main market area.
Konark & Chandrabhaga: The Sun-Kissed Coast
Just 35 km from Puri and about 75 km from Bhubaneswar, Konark offers more than the magnificent Sun Temple. A few kilometres away lies Chandrabhaga Beach, a serene and clean shore that holds the distinction of being India's first Blue Flag certified beach. Unlike the more commercialised beaches, Chandrabhaga is celebrated for its tranquil environment, making it ideal for watching a spectacular sunrise and quiet contemplation. For those seeking a quieter, more nostalgic coastal experience, Gopalpur-on-Sea is the perfect choice. Once a bustling seaport during the British era, it has now settled into a tranquil beach resort town. Located about 170 km from Bhubaneswar, the drive takes around three hours, making it an ideal destination for a proper weekend escape. The beach is known for its old lighthouse, crumbling jetty pillars, and a relaxed atmosphere. It's less crowded than Puri, offering long stretches of golden sand perfect for leisurely walks and enjoying fresh seafood from local shacks. The best time to visit is between October and February when the weather is pleasant.
Chilika Lake & Rajhans Island: A Unique Coastal Ecosystem
Not a traditional beach, but an unmissable coastal wonder, Chilika Lake is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon. The Satapada side, closest to Bhubaneswar, is the prime spot for sighting Irrawaddy dolphins. From Satapada, you can take a boat to Rajhans Island, a narrow strip of land with the lagoon on one side and the Bay of Bengal on the other. This offers a truly unique experience of being between two vast, different bodies of water. The island is serene, with clean sands and swaying casuarinas. You can enjoy fresh crab and fish from small shacks on the island. The journey from Bhubaneswar is around 110 km to the Satapada jetty, from where a boat ride completes the adventure to this hidden paradise.
