So, how does this magic work? The design is simple but ingenious. A sub-irrigated planter consists of a main growing container that sits above a built-in water reservoir. The two are connected by a wicking system, which can be soil columns or absorbent fabric wicks. This system uses a natural process called capillary action—the same force that allows a sponge to soak up liquid—to draw water from the reservoir up into the soil as the plant needs it. The plant itself dictates when and how much it drinks, effectively watering itself.

The primary benefit for anyone with a packed schedule is convenience.
