The New Rule: 30 Days Visa-Free
The latest decision from the Thai Cabinet, made on July 14, 2026, confirms that Indian passport holders will continue to receive visa-free entry into Thailand. However, the key change is the duration of stay, which has been revised from the previous temporary
60-day period to a standard 30-day visa-free stay. This move is part of a broader overhaul of Thailand's visa framework, aimed at standardising rules and balancing tourism promotion with national security. The change provides much-needed clarity after a proposal in May 2026 to scrap the visa-free scheme for Indians caused confusion and a reported drop in tourist arrivals.
Why the Change Happened
The Thai government has been reviewing its visa policies, which had been expanded to boost tourism after the pandemic. The temporary 60-day visa-free scheme for 93 countries, including India, was introduced to attract more visitors. However, authorities cited concerns over the misuse of long-stay visas for non-tourism activities. After initially proposing to move India back to a paid Visa-on-Arrival system, the Thai government reversed course following feedback from the tourism industry and a decline in Indian visitors. The new 30-day rule is seen as a compromise that aligns with the typical travel patterns of Indian tourists, whose average stay is around 7.2 days, while still offering the convenience of visa-free travel.
What This Means for Your Travel Plans
For the vast majority of Indian holidaymakers, this is good news. The 30-day visa-free period is more than sufficient for most vacations, from quick city breaks in Bangkok to extended beach holidays in Phuket or Krabi. The key benefit is that you do not need to apply for a visa beforehand or pay a fee upon arrival, simplifying travel planning and reducing costs. This decision places India in a privileged group of countries with continued visa-free access, averting the previously feared move to a shorter, fee-based Visa on Arrival. Essentially, the process remains seamless for short-term tourists.
When Do the New Rules Take Effect?
It is crucial for travellers to understand that these new rules are not immediate. The changes approved by the Thai Cabinet will officially come into effect 15 days after they are published in the Royal Gazette. Until that official publication and subsequent grace period, the existing 60-day visa-free stay technically remains in place. However, with the decision now public, anyone planning a trip should do so based on the new 30-day limit to avoid any issues. Always check the Royal Thai Embassy or official immigration websites for the exact implementation date before finalizing your travel arrangements.
Planning a Longer Stay?
If your travel plans involve staying in Thailand for more than 30 days, you will need to apply for an appropriate visa before you travel. A standard 60-day single-entry tourist e-Visa is a popular option for those planning a longer trip. This must be obtained from the Royal Thai Embassy or consulate before your departure. The new 30-day visa-free entry cannot simply be extended for another 30 days in the same way the old 60-day stamp could be. For those considering very long stays, such as digital nomads, Thailand has also introduced other long-term visa options like the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), which are worth exploring.
Essential Checklist Before You Fly
Regardless of the visa-free period, all travellers entering Thailand should be prepared to present certain documents if asked by an immigration officer. These include a passport with at least six months of validity, a confirmed return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation for your stay, and evidence of sufficient funds for your expenses (often cited as 10,000 THB per person). Additionally, filling out the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before your flight is mandatory for all foreign travellers.
