A Window to the Western Ghats
Starting October 22, 2026, passengers on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328) will have the option to travel in an Executive AC Vistadome coach. This marks a significant moment for rail tourism in the region, as it is the first time a train operating
through Kerala will feature such a coach. The primary allure is the promise of an immersive travel experience, offering unobstructed, panoramic views of the Western Ghats' stunning natural beauty. The addition is expected to be a major draw for tourists, families, and pilgrims looking to enhance their journey between the two temple towns. The initial response has been overwhelming, with tickets for the inaugural journey selling out rapidly.
What is a Vistadome Coach?
Vistadome coaches are specially designed for sightseeing. They feature massive, extra-large glass windows that provide an expansive view of the passing scenery. The key feature is a see-through glass roof, allowing travellers to gaze at the sky and the rolling hills above. The seats inside are plush, can be rotated, and offer generous legroom, ensuring passengers can orient themselves for the best possible views without leaving their seats. These coaches also typically come equipped with modern amenities like Wi-Fi, an observation lounge area, sliding doors, and upscale restroom facilities, elevating the comfort level far beyond that of a standard train compartment.
The Scenic Route
The Madurai-Guruvayur Express travels through one of the most picturesque railway lines in Southern India. The main highlight for passengers in the Vistadome coach will be the Sengottai-Punalur ghat section. This stretch is famous for its winding tracks through misty hills, lush green forests, and dramatic mountain passes, including the Aryankavu pass. The train navigates numerous tunnels and bridges, offering breathtaking vistas of valleys and waterfalls that are often missed during a regular train journey. The Vistadome's design is perfectly suited to capitalize on this natural splendour, turning the commute itself into a memorable part of the trip.
Trial Period, Schedule, and Fares
This premium service is being introduced on a temporary trial basis. For train number 16327, leaving from Madurai, the Vistadome coach will be available from October 22, 2026, to January 15, 2027. This service will run on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. On the return journey, train number 16328 from Guruvayur will feature the coach from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027, operating on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Bookings are open, and passengers can reserve seats under the 'EV' class code on the IRCTC website or at reservation counters. The fare for the full end-to-end journey from Madurai to Guruvayur is set at ₹1,875, while a basic fare for shorter distances starts at ₹515.
Connecting Two Holy Cities
This initiative connects two of South India's most significant spiritual destinations. Madurai is home to the ancient and world-renowned Meenakshi Amman Temple, a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture. Guruvayur is famous for the Guruvayur Temple, one of the most important places of worship for Hindus in Kerala, dedicated to Lord Krishna. The introduction of the Vistadome coach enhances the pilgrimage experience, allowing devotees to travel between these sacred sites in comfort while enjoying the serene landscapes. Officials hope the service will not only benefit pilgrims but also significantly boost regional tourism.
