Not long ago, the ability to write a clever instruction for a large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT or Gemini was seen as a golden ticket. The job title "Prompt Engineer" exploded in popularity, promising high salaries for those who could “talk” to AI
effectively. This skill, essentially crafting a single, effective query to get a desired output, helped companies and individuals unlock the initial, impressive power of generative AI. It was about asking the right question in the right way to generate an article, a piece of code, or a market summary. The focus was on the immediate result, a single, transactional exchange with the machine. But as businesses move from simply experimenting with AI to integrating it deeply into their operations, the limitations of this approach are becoming clear.
The Rise of Multi-Step Workflows
The new frontier isn't about a single perfect prompt, but about designing entire systems and workflows where AI is a component. This is the world of multi-step tasks. Instead of asking an AI to "write a report on customer sentiment," a multi-step approach involves breaking the problem down. An AI-powered workflow might first pull data from customer reviews, then use an LLM to classify sentiment, then another to identify key themes, and a final one to generate a structured report with charts and summaries. This process, often involving different tools and models working in sequence, is far more robust and valuable. Corporate training in India has already started to reflect this, with programmes now teaching employees how to design multi-step AI workflows for complex tasks, focusing on triggers, decision points, and automation. This shift represents a move from prompt engineering to system design.
Why Is the Skill Set Evolving?
This evolution is driven by business reality. While single prompts are great for demos, they are often inconsistent and fail when faced with the complexity of real-world tasks. Companies need reliable, repeatable, and scalable AI solutions. As a result, the standalone "Prompt Engineer" job title is already shrinking, while prompting as a skill is being absorbed into other, more technical roles like AI Engineer or AI Product Manager. The market now demands professionals who can not only write a prompt but also integrate AI APIs, work with vector databases, and build evaluation pipelines to test outputs. This reflects a maturation of the market: as AI becomes critical infrastructure, the focus shifts from clever tricks to resilient, dependable systems.
The New Premium Skills in India
In this new environment, the most in-demand professionals are those who can bridge the gap between AI capability and business application. While foundational skills like Python remain important, the bar has moved. Job descriptions in India now frequently list experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), which involves connecting LLMs to external knowledge bases, and the design of agentic AI systems that can perform sequences of tasks autonomously. According to a July 2026 report, agentic AI and multi-agent system design are among the fastest-growing skill categories in India, driven by a sharp rise in demand and a shortage of trained professionals. NASSCOM, India's key tech industry body, has warned that the country risks creating an "AI-reliant" workforce instead of an "AI-native" one, emphasizing the need for deeper engineering expertise beyond just using AI tools.
How India Is Adapting
India's tech industry and workforce are responding to this shift. Major IT firms like TCS and Wipro have undertaken massive AI training initiatives for hundreds of thousands of employees. However, it's not just techies who are upskilling. A significant portion of enrolments in AI courses are now coming from senior professionals in non-technical fields like finance, healthcare, and manufacturing. This indicates a broad recognition that AI fluency is becoming a core professional capability, not just a specialist skill. Companies are moving toward skills-first recruitment, where demonstrating the ability to solve problems with AI is more valuable than academic credentials alone. This practical, application-focused approach is crucial as India aims to meet a projected demand of over a million AI professionals by 2027.
