What is the Vande Bharat Sleeper?
The Vande Bharat Express has already made its mark on daytime travel in India, connecting cities with locally-manufactured, semi-high-speed trainsets. The sleeper version is the next logical step, designed specifically for long-distance overnight journeys
between 800 and 1,200 kilometres. Unlike traditional locomotive-hauled trains, these are self-propelled units, allowing for quicker acceleration and deceleration. The first commercial service was inaugurated on January 17, 2026, between Howrah and Kamakhya, ushering in a new category of premium overnight travel. This was followed by a second service connecting Varanasi and Amritsar, launched in July 2026. These trains aim to offer a superior alternative to existing premium services like the Rajdhani Express.
A Leap in Comfort and Speed
The Vande Bharat sleeper is engineered to provide a hotel-like experience on wheels. Each 16-coach train has a capacity of 823 passengers across First, Second, and Third AC classes. The berths are designed to be wider and better cushioned than those in existing trains, complemented by sensor-based lighting and individual reading lights. Key upgrades focus on the passenger experience: enhanced soundproofing for a quieter journey, smoother suspension to reduce jerks, and advanced air purification systems. Other modern amenities include automatic doors, bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, CCTV surveillance, and onboard Wi-Fi infotainment systems. Critically, these trains are faster, designed to run at speeds up to 160 kmph, which can shave hours off existing schedules. The inaugural Howrah-Kamakhya service, for instance, reduces travel time by about three hours compared to the previous fastest train.
Redefining the Weekend Itinerary
This combination of speed and comfort is the real game-changer for short getaways. For residents of major metros, it opens up a new range of destinations that were previously too time-consuming to reach for a two-day trip. Imagine leaving your city on a Friday night and arriving at your destination early Saturday morning, well-rested and ready to explore. After a full weekend, the return journey on Sunday night gets you back in time for the work week. This model makes a weekend trip from Delhi to Varanasi or Mumbai to Bengaluru far more feasible and less exhausting than a long drive or a costly last-minute flight. By turning travel time into comfortable rest time, the Vande Bharat sleeper allows travellers to maximise their holiday time at the destination itself, boosting prospects for regional tourism.
Routes and Future Expansion
Following the launch of the Howrah-Kamakhya and Varanasi-Amritsar routes, Indian Railways is planning a nationwide expansion. Several high-demand corridors are reportedly under consideration, including key routes like Mumbai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Mumbai, and services connecting to Chennai and Secunderabad. The vision is ambitious, with plans for hundreds of Vande Bharat trainsets, including many sleepers, to be rolled out across the country by 2030. However, travellers should temper their excitement with patience. The rollout of a large number of these advanced trains has faced some delays due to pending design approvals and complex manufacturing processes, with some production timelines being pushed back. While the initial services have been met with high demand, expanding the network will be a gradual process.
