Mark Your Calendar: Key Festival Dates
The final quarter of the year is packed with major celebrations that trigger a massive wave of travel across the country. For 2026, two of the biggest festivals to plan for are Dussehra on Tuesday, October 20, and Diwali on Sunday, November 8. The travel rush
typically begins several days before these dates and continues for a week or so after, as people journey to and from their hometowns. Knowing these dates is the first step in planning, as train tickets on popular routes get booked out months in advance. The standard booking window for Indian Railways opens 120 days ahead, so the sooner you lock in your travel dates, the better your chances of securing a confirmed seat.
The Booking Blueprint: Securing Your Ticket
Booking a train ticket during festival season requires strategy. The IRCTC website and official mobile app are your primary tools. Spontaneous plans are difficult, so booking weeks or even months ahead is the most reliable method. For last-minute trips, the Tatkal scheme is an option, opening at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes one day before the train's departure. However, securing a Tatkal ticket is highly competitive. During the festive rush, Indian Railways often runs hundreds of 'Festival Special' trains on high-demand routes. These are announced closer to the festival dates and can be booked exclusively online. Keep a close eye on the IRCTC portal and news announcements for these services, as they provide much-needed extra capacity.
Flexible Journeys: The Vikalp Scheme
Even with advance planning, you might end up with a waitlisted ticket. This is where the Vikalp scheme, also known as the Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme (ATAS), becomes incredibly useful. When booking your ticket, you can opt into Vikalp for free. If your ticket remains on the waiting list after the final chart is prepared, Indian Railways will automatically consider you for a confirmed berth in an alternate train travelling on the same route. You can select up to seven alternate trains. It doesn't guarantee a confirmed seat, but it significantly increases your chances. Remember, if you are allotted a berth in a different train, you can no longer travel on your original train. This option is a fantastic backup plan that many travelers overlook.
For Complex Trips: Circular Journey Tickets
If your festive travel involves visiting multiple cities for pilgrimages or family gatherings, a Circular Journey Ticket might be your most economical choice. This special ticket allows you to book a round trip that starts and ends at the same station but covers a customized itinerary with up to eight break-of-journey stops. The main advantage is that the fare is calculated at a telescopic rate, which is considerably cheaper than buying separate point-to-point tickets for each leg of the journey. However, unlike regular tickets, these cannot be booked online. You must visit the Divisional Commercial Manager's office or a major station's booking office with your planned itinerary to have the ticket issued.
Navigating Busy Routes and Stations
Certain corridors become extremely congested during festival periods. Routes like Delhi-Patna, Mumbai-Varanasi, and Delhi-Lucknow are notorious for heavy passenger traffic. Major stations such as New Delhi, Patna Junction, and Mumbai Central become incredibly crowded. To manage this, authorities often implement crowd control measures, including setting up holding areas and deploying extra staff. Arrive at the station at least 60-90 minutes before your departure to navigate security, find your platform, and avoid any last-minute chaos. Pack light to make it easier to move through crowded areas.
Essential Travel Day Tips
On the day of your journey, a few simple precautions can make a world of difference. Always carry a valid government-issued ID to present along with your ticket. Pack essentials like drinking water, light snacks, and any personal medications you might need. While travelling, be vigilant about your luggage; use a chain and lock to secure it under the lower berth if possible. Avoid standing near the train's open doors, as sudden jerks can be dangerous. Finally, keep your phone charged and have useful apps like the NTES app handy to track your train's live status. Following these simple steps will help ensure your journey home is as joyful as the festival itself.
