The Quest for Smarter Snacking
When hunger strikes between lunch and dinner, it's all too easy to reach for a packet of fried chips or sugary biscuits. While convenient, these processed snacks often come loaded with unhealthy fats, sodium, and empty calories, leaving you feeling sluggish.
Making your own snacks at home puts you in complete control of the ingredients. By choosing baking or roasting over frying, you can drastically reduce the oil content while preserving the natural goodness of the ingredients. This simple switch allows you to create treats that are not only delicious but also align with a healthier lifestyle, providing energy and nutrients without the unnecessary additives.
Crispy Oven-Baked Banana Chips
Forget the deep-fried, store-bought versions; homemade banana chips are incredibly easy and far more wholesome. Baking banana slices transforms them into a delightfully crunchy and naturally sweet treat. Commercial banana chips are often fried, which adds a significant amount of fat and calories. Baked versions, on the other hand, require little to no oil, making them a much lighter alternative. Bananas are a great source of potassium and dietary fibre, which are retained in the baking process. To make them, thinly slice two semi-ripe bananas. For the best results, the slices should be consistent in thickness. Toss them gently in a tablespoon of lemon juice to prevent browning and add a subtle tang. Arrange the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. For a hint of warmth, you can sprinkle a little cinnamon on top. Bake in a preheated oven at a low temperature, around 100°C (200°F), for 1.5 to 2 hours. Flip the slices halfway through to ensure they crisp up evenly. Let them cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
Flavourful Spiced Roasted Makhana
Makhana, or fox nuts, are a true superfood that has been a staple in Indian households for ages. These puffed lotus seeds are incredibly light, crunchy, and packed with nutrients. They are low in calories and fat, gluten-free, and rich in protein and essential minerals like magnesium and potassium. This impressive nutritional profile makes roasted makhana an ideal guilt-free snack, perfect for weight management and overall health. Creating this snack takes just ten minutes. Start by dry-roasting 2 cups of plain makhana in a pan on low heat for about 7-8 minutes, stirring frequently until they are crisp. To check if they're done, press one between your fingers; it should crush easily with a crunch. Set the makhana aside. In the same hot pan, add a teaspoon of ghee or oil. Turn off the heat and add your spices—try a mix of ¼ teaspoon turmeric, ½ teaspoon red chili powder, and ½ teaspoon chaat masala, along with salt to taste. Immediately add the roasted makhana back to the pan and toss well to ensure they are evenly coated. Allow them to cool before serving.
Make Them Your Own
The beauty of these homemade snacks lies in their versatility. You can easily customise the flavours to suit your palate. For the banana chips, experiment with spices like nutmeg or a pinch of cardamom for a different aromatic profile. If you prefer a savoury chip, you can even use raw bananas and season them with salt, pepper, and a touch of turmeric before baking. For the makhana, the possibilities are endless. Create a peri-peri version with paprika and a hint of garlic powder. For a simple, classic flavour, just use black pepper and black salt. You can also make a sweet version by tossing the roasted makhana in a tiny bit of melted jaggery and a sprinkle of fennel seeds for a truly unique treat. Don't be afraid to mix and match spices to find your perfect combination.
