El Niño, Spanish for 'the Christ Child', is a natural climate pattern defined by the abnormal warming of surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. This warming, which recurs every two to seven years, disrupts the normal circulation

The warming of the Pacific disrupts atmospheric pressure systems, which can suppress the formation of rain clouds over the Indian subcontinent, leading to delayed onset, prolonged dry spells, and an overall reduction in rainfall.
