The Economics of an Empty Seat
At its core, a flight route is a business decision that lives and dies by its profitability. Airlines undertake extensive market research, forecasting demand and potential revenue before committing an aircraft, which is a multi-million dollar asset, to
a new city pair. However, even the best forecasts can be wrong. The primary reason a new route is cancelled is that it fails to become economical. This can happen if passenger numbers are lower than expected, or if the airline is forced into price wars with competitors, eroding profits. Every flight has a break-even point, a certain number of seats that must be sold at a specific average price just to cover costs like fuel, crew salaries, maintenance, and airport fees. If a route consistently fails to meet this threshold, the airline will inevitably pull the plug and redeploy the aircraft to a busier, more profitable destination.
The Ripple Effect of Operations
Beyond pure profit and loss, operational realities play a huge role in a route's survival. Airlines operate with a finite number of aircraft and crew. Sometimes, a new route is launched with a specific aircraft in mind, but if deliveries of new planes are delayed or if existing aircraft are grounded for maintenance—as seen with recent issues affecting Pratt & Whitney engines—airlines are forced to cut schedules. Airport logistics are another hurdle. Securing a convenient landing and takeoff slot at a major hub can be intensely competitive. An inconvenient time slot can make a route unattractive to business travellers, impacting demand. Furthermore, the modern hub-and-spoke system means a new route's success often depends on how well it connects to other flights in the airline's network. If the connection times are too tight or too long, it can deter passengers from booking.
Competition and Market Dynamics
No airline operates in a vacuum. The launch of a new route often triggers a response from competitors who may cut prices, increase their own flight frequencies, or even launch a service on the same route to defend their market share. This can turn a potentially profitable route into a financial drain. Sometimes, routes are even cut not because they are unprofitable, but as a strategic move when airline partnerships change. In India, the government's UDAN scheme, designed to connect smaller cities, has highlighted the challenge of sustainability. Many routes launched with subsidies struggle to survive once the financial support ends, showing that initial government backing doesn't guarantee long-term commercial viability. An audit found that only about one in ten UDAN routes continued on its own after the subsidy period, proving that sustained demand, not just initial support, is key.
The Human Factor: Shifting Demand and External Shocks
Ultimately, passenger demand dictates a route's fate. Initial excitement for a new destination can be high, spurred by low introductory fares. The real test is whether that demand holds up once prices normalize and the novelty wears off. Demand is also highly seasonal. A flight to a popular holiday spot might be full during the summer but half-empty in the winter, forcing airlines to make it a seasonal-only route or cancel it altogether. Finally, routes are vulnerable to external shocks beyond an airline's control. Political tensions between countries can lead to the sudden suspension of all air links. Safety concerns, such as flying over conflict zones, can also force airlines to reroute or cancel flights indefinitely. These factors show that even a well-planned route can be upended by global events.
