The Old System's Breaking Point
For years, booking a train ticket during peak demand—like the opening of the Tatkal window or during festive seasons—has been a test of patience and internet speed. The previous Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which has been the backbone of railway
bookings for nearly four decades, often struggled under the immense pressure of millions of users logging in simultaneously. This resulted in slow loading times, payment gateway failures, and the dreaded website crash, leaving many passengers frustrated and without a ticket. The system, first introduced in 1986, had evolved but was simply not built for the massive scale of modern online demand, where nearly 90% of all reserved tickets are now booked online.
A Leap in Booking Capacity
The heart of the new upgrade is a monumental increase in processing power. The old system could handle approximately 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The new, next-generation PRS, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), is designed to process over 1.5 lakh (150,000) ticket bookings per minute. This is a nearly five-fold increase in capacity, fundamentally changing the dynamics of high-traffic booking. By moving to a modern, cloud-based platform, Indian Railways aims to eliminate the bottlenecks that caused the system to slow down and fail during critical booking windows. This massive scaling means the system is far more resilient and capable of managing the intense, concentrated demand that characterises Tatkal bookings.
What This Means for Tatkal
The Tatkal window is the ultimate stress test for the reservation system, where tickets on popular routes are often sold out within minutes. The new system's enhanced capacity directly addresses this challenge. With the ability to handle far more transactions every second, more users can successfully complete their bookings without the session timing out or crashing. Early data from the new IRCTC beta website, which launched in July 2026 as part of this phased transition, is already showing positive results. According to Indian Railways, bookings completed within the first three minutes of the Tatkal window have increased by over 5%, indicating that the system is indeed faster and more efficient when it matters most. This means passengers have a genuinely better chance of securing a confirmed ticket during the morning rush.
More Than Just Booking Speed
The upgrade extends beyond just booking tickets. The capacity for handling passenger enquiries—such as checking PNR status, seat availability, and fares—is also seeing a dramatic tenfold increase. The system will be able to handle over 40 lakh (4 million) enquiries per minute, up from the current 4 lakh. This reduces the overall load on the system, as fewer people will be stuck on enquiry pages, freeing up resources for transactions. Furthermore, the revamped IRCTC website features a more user-friendly interface. It allows passengers to see seat availability across different classes on a single screen and has reduced the number of annoying CAPTCHA prompts and pop-ups that previously slowed down the booking flow.
A Smoother and Fairer System
Alongside the technical upgrades, Indian Railways has introduced other measures to streamline the process. For Tatkal bookings, there is an increased emphasis on user authentication, sometimes using Aadhaar or other government IDs via DigiLocker, to ensure fairness and reduce the misuse of the system by unauthorised agents. Some reservation counters have also introduced a token system to manage queues during peak hours. While the transition to the new PRS is being rolled out in phases to ensure stability, the goal is clear: to create a ticketing experience that is not only faster and more reliable but also more transparent and accessible for every passenger. This represents the most significant overhaul of the railway reservation infrastructure in decades, moving it from a system that creaked under pressure to one designed for future demand.
