From 'Champi' to TikTok
Scroll through Instagram Reels or TikTok, and you’ll see it everywhere. Influencers with gleaming hair are evangelising a “new” discovery: coating their strands in oil before washing. They call it “hair slugging” or “pre-shampoo oiling.” For millions
in India, this isn't a fleeting trend; it’s a timeless tradition. The weekly `champi`, a non-negotiable part of our upbringing, has been rebranded for a global audience. While it’s wonderful to see the practice appreciated, it's essential to remember its roots—a practice passed down through generations, steeped in Ayurveda and familial love, not just a hashtag.
Why This Habit Is Worth Reviving
So, why did our grandmothers insist on it? The benefits of hair oiling are not just anecdotal. When you massage oil into your scalp, you stimulate blood circulation, which can promote healthier hair growth. The oil itself acts as a protective barrier, lubricating the hair shaft and preventing the harsh stripping effects of shampoos. This reduces hygral fatigue—the swelling and drying of hair that occurs when it gets wet—which minimises breakage and split ends. Different oils offer unique benefits: coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft to reduce protein loss, castor oil is famed for its potential to boost thickness, and amla oil is rich in antioxidants that support scalp health. It’s a simple, powerful act of preventative care for your hair.
Choosing Your Champion Oil
Not all oils are created equal, and the best one for you depends on your hair type and concerns. For fine or oily-prone hair, lighter oils like grapeseed, almond, or argan are excellent choices as they won't weigh your hair down. If you have dry, thick, or coarse hair, richer oils like coconut, olive, or avocado oil will provide intense hydration. For those concerned with hair fall or seeking to promote growth, castor oil (often mixed with a carrier oil like coconut or almond to reduce its viscosity) and amla-infused oils are traditional favourites. Don’t be afraid to experiment with blends. A few drops of rosemary essential oil, for instance, can be added to any carrier oil for its scalp-stimulating properties.
The Modern Ritual: A How-To
Ready to reclaim this ritual? Here’s a simple guide to doing it right. Start with dry, detangled hair. Gently warm up a few tablespoons of your chosen oil—this helps it penetrate more effectively. Part your hair into small sections and use your fingertips (or a cotton ball) to apply the oil directly to your scalp. Once your scalp is covered, begin the massage. Use gentle, circular motions for 5-10 minutes. This isn't just about application; it’s about relaxation and stimulation. After the massage, work the remaining oil through the lengths of your hair, paying special attention to the ends. You can leave it on for as little as 30 minutes or, for a deep treatment, overnight (just be sure to protect your pillowcase with a towel or a silk cap).
The Wash-Out Is Key
The one step people often get wrong is washing the oil out, which can lead to a greasy residue. The secret is to apply shampoo to your dry, oiled hair *before* adding water. Emulsify the shampoo with the oil first, massaging it into your scalp and through the lengths. This helps break down the oil effectively. Once you’ve worked the shampoo in, slowly add water and lather up as you normally would. You may need a second shampoo to ensure all the oil is gone. Always follow up with a conditioner, focusing primarily on the ends of your hair.
