The snake boat, or Chundan Vallam, is more than just a watercraft; it is a cultural icon of Kerala. Stretching over 100 feet long and accommodating around a hundred rowers, these boats are magnificent feats of indigenous engineering. Traditionally built
from the water-resistant wood of the 'Anjili' tree (a wild jackfruit), their construction follows principles laid down in the ancient 'Sthapathya Veda', a treatise on architecture. Master carpenters, known as 'Moothasharis', pass down the intricate building techniques orally through generations. For the communities they belong to, especially the 'Palliyodams' of Aranmula which are linked to temple rituals, these boats are sacred vessels, revered and cared for with immense devotion.
The Challenge: Wood Meets Water
Keeping a massive wooden hull in prime condition is a constant battle against nature. The water seeks to seep into the wood, making it heavy and prone to rot. Marine organisms can attach to the hull, creating drag and damaging the surface. For a vessel built for speed and competition in the famous 'Vallamkali' (boat races), these are critical issues to overcome. Modern boats might rely on industrial fibreglass or chemical coatings, but the guardians of the Chundan Vallam tradition turn to a time-tested solution that has been perfected over centuries.
The Ancestral Sealant
The secret to the snake boat’s glossy, dark hull is not a single resin but a potent, organic concoction. Before each racing season, the boats are painstakingly coated with a unique mixture. The primary ingredients are fish oil, the fine ash of burnt coconut shells, and often, raw eggs. This blend, while smelling pungent during application, works wonders. The fish oil penetrates deep into the wood, acting as a natural waterproofer. The coconut shell ash, which is essentially carbon, provides a protective, anti-fouling layer. The egg acts as a binding agent, helping the mixture adhere to the wood and creating a remarkably smooth, slick finish when dried and polished.
The Art of Application
The annual maintenance of a snake boat is a communal ritual. Under the watchful eye of the village carpenter, the dark, thick paste is prepared and rubbed into every inch of the hull's exterior. This is not a quick or easy job; it requires immense labour and care to ensure a uniform coating. The process does more than just protect the boat; it strengthens the bonds within the community as villagers come together to prepare their vessel for the honour and glory of the races. This ritual application is a physical manifestation of their collective pride and dedication to preserving their heritage.

The waterproof coating prevents the wood from absorbing water, keeping the boat light and resilient. It protects the valuable 'Anjili' wood from decay, extending the life of these expensive and laboriously built vessels. Second, it enhances performance. The slick, polished surface, often referred to as being 'lubricious', drastically reduces friction and drag in the water.
