A Landmark Connection to the Valley
After much anticipation, the Vande Bharat Express now directly connects the Jammu region with the Kashmir Valley, a landmark achievement in Indian infrastructure. This service operates on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a marvel of
engineering that cuts through the challenging Himalayan terrain with numerous tunnels and bridges. The initial services began in June 2025, first between Katra and Srinagar, and were extended to Jammu Tawi by April 2026, creating a direct link. Due to overwhelming demand, Indian Railways has already introduced multiple services on the route, with a third train announced in August 2026 to further boost capacity. This all-weather rail line offers a reliable alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is often prone to disruptions.
The Route, Timings, and Key Stops
The journey from Jammu Tawi (JAT) to Srinagar (SINA) covers approximately 270 kilometres in under five hours, a significant reduction from the 8-11 hours required by road. Multiple train services operate daily, except for scheduled maintenance days for specific train pairs. For example, train 26401 departs Jammu Tawi around 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar by 11:10 AM. The return service, 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM, arriving back in Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. Key stops along this scenic route include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), Reasi, and Banihal. This allows connectivity for pilgrims heading to Vaishno Devi as well as other travellers. It is crucial for travellers to check the latest schedule on the official IRCTC website before their journey, as timings can be subject to seasonal changes.
Crossing Engineering Marvels
The journey is as spectacular as the destination. The Vande Bharat route to Kashmir features some of India's most impressive engineering feats. The undisputed highlight is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 meters above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower. As the train glides across this 1.3-kilometre-long structure, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the gorge below. Another significant structure is the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. The route also passes through 38 tunnels, with the longest, T-49, stretching over 12.75 kilometres. Recently, the permissible speed on the Katra-Banihal section was increased to 100 kmph, further reducing travel time and enhancing the experience of crossing these iconic structures.
Onboard Experience and Special Features
The Vande Bharat Express for Kashmir is specially designed to handle the region's extreme weather. The train is built to operate in temperatures as low as -20°C. It features advanced heating systems to prevent water lines from freezing, heated windshields for clear visibility, and a snow-cutting cattle guard to clear tracks. For passenger comfort, the train is fully air-conditioned and offers two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), with the latter providing wider, rotating seats. Onboard catering is included in the fare, and the menu often features local Kashmiri delicacies. The train is also equipped with bio-vacuum toilets, automatic doors, and mobile charging sockets for a modern travel experience.
Booking Tickets and Planning Your Trip
Booking tickets for the Vande Bharat Express to Kashmir is straightforward and can be done online through the official IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. Given the high demand and near-full occupancy since its launch, it is highly advisable to book your tickets well in advance, as booking opens up to 60 days prior. Indicative fares for the Jammu-Srinagar route start around ₹715 for AC Chair Car (CC) and ₹1,320 for Executive Chair Car (EC), though these can vary. When booking, ensure you use the correct station codes: JAT for Jammu Tawi and SINA for Srinagar.
