The Power of the Morning Cortisol Spike
When morning sunlight enters your eyes, it sends a direct signal to your brain to kickstart the day. One of its first actions is to trigger the release of cortisol. While often known as the 'stress hormone,' a healthy spike of cortisol in the morning is essential for wakefulness and alertness. This is called the cortisol awakening response, and it’s what helps you shake off grogginess and feel ready to go. Studies have even linked low waking cortisol levels to fatigue. By getting that early light exposure, you’re ensuring this hormonal response happens at the right time, setting a positive tone for your energy levels for the rest of the day.
Suppressing Sleepiness and Setting a Timer
At the same time it boosts cortisol, morning light also hits the brakes on melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. Light exposure signals to your brain that it's daytime and sleep is no longer the priority. This immediate suppression of melatonin helps you feel more awake right away. But it also does something even more clever: it sets a timer for when melatonin should be released again later in the evening. By getting a clear 'off' signal in the morning, your body knows to produce a robust 'on' signal for melatonin about 14-16 hours later, helping you fall asleep more easily at night.

The afternoon energy slump often happens when your internal clock is out of sync. If your morning cortisol spike is delayed or weak, your body’s energy-regulating hormones are on a skewed schedule. You might feel groggy in the morning and then experience a dip in alertness later when your cortisol levels naturally wane without having had a proper peak. By anchoring your circadian rhythm with morning sunlight, you create a more stable and predictable hormonal pattern. A Practical Guide to Morning Sunlight
Making this a habit is simple. Experts recommend getting outside within the first 30 to 60 minutes of waking. Aim for about 10 minutes of sun exposure on a clear day and 15 to 20 minutes on a cloudy day, as outdoor light is still far more powerful than indoor lighting. Don’t wear sunglasses, as the light needs to enter your eyes to signal the SCN, but never look directly at the sun. Unfortunately, sitting by a window won’t cut it; glass filters out many of the specific wavelengths of light that your brain needs to reset the clock.
