What Exactly is the MDAC?
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, is a mandatory online pre-arrival form for all foreign visitors, including those from India. Introduced on December 1, 2023, it replaces the old paper-based landing cards you might have filled out on the plane
in the past. Its purpose is to streamline the immigration process and enhance security. Think of it as a digital heads-up to Malaysian immigration that you are on your way. Importantly, the MDAC is completely free and must be filled out on the official government portal. Do not be fooled by third-party websites that ask for payment.
MDAC vs. Visa-Free Entry
This is a common point of confusion. While Indian passport holders can enjoy visa-free entry for stays of up to 30 days until the end of 2026, this does not exempt them from the MDAC requirement. The two are separate. Visa-free entry is your permission to enter the country, while the MDAC is the required registration of your arrival. You must complete the MDAC to avail the visa-free facility. At the airport, immigration officers will check for your passport validity (minimum six months), return flight ticket, accommodation proof, and your MDAC completion.
When and Where to Fill the Form
Timing is critical. You must fill out and submit the MDAC within three days (or 72 hours) prior to your arrival in Malaysia. For example, if you are scheduled to land on August 20th, you can submit the form anytime from August 17th onwards. Submitting it earlier than three days will result in an invalid application. The form must be completed online through the official portal of the Malaysian Immigration Department. You can easily find it by searching for "Malaysia Digital Arrival Card official website" or by navigating to the imigresen-online.imi.gov.my domain.
A Step-by-Step Guide for a Flawless Submission
Filling the form takes only a few minutes if you have your details ready. First, you'll enter your personal information: full name, passport number, date of birth, and nationality. Double-check that your name is entered exactly as it appears in your passport, without using nicknames or initials. Next, provide your travel information, including your date of arrival and departure, your mode of transport, and your last port of embarkation (the city you are flying from just before landing in Malaysia). Finally, you will need to enter the address of your accommodation in Malaysia. If you are staying at multiple hotels, just enter the address of your first hotel. After carefully reviewing all the details to avoid typos, submit the form.
Common Mistakes Indian Travellers Should Avoid
To truly master the MDAC, it's essential to know the common pitfalls. The most frequent error is a typo in the passport number, especially mixing up the letter 'O' and the number '0', or 'I' and '1'. Another is getting the name slightly wrong; it must be an exact match to your passport. Many travellers also mistakenly enter their departure date from India instead of their arrival date in Malaysia. For the accommodation address, simply writing "Hotel in Kuala Lumpur" is not enough; a full address is often required. Finally, ensure you are using the official, free government website, as unofficial sites may charge unnecessary fees.
What Happens After You Click Submit?
Once you successfully submit the form, you will receive a confirmation on the screen and a confirmation email sent to the address you provided. This email contains your registration details and a unique PIN. While immigration systems are digital, it is highly recommended to save a digital copy (screenshot or PDF) of this confirmation on your phone. Some travellers prefer to keep a printout as a backup. When you arrive at the immigration counter in Malaysia, the officer will be able to verify your submission electronically, but having the confirmation handy can speed things up and provide peace of mind.
