For Engineers and Scientists
The most sought-after roles at ISRO are for Scientist/Engineer 'SC'. These positions form the core of India's space missions. The eligibility criteria are stringent. Typically, candidates need a B.E./B.Tech or an equivalent degree in specific engineering
disciplines like Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, or Civil Engineering. A crucial requirement is a high academic score, generally a minimum aggregate of 65% marks or a CGPA of 6.84 on a 10-point scale. For some recruitment drives, ISRO uses GATE scores for shortlisting candidates, followed by a technical interview. In such cases, having a valid GATE score in the corresponding paper is mandatory. The age limit for these posts is usually 28 years, though relaxations for reserved categories apply.
The Technical Support Backbone
Beyond the Scientist/Engineer roles, ISRO heavily relies on Technical Assistants to support its research and operational activities. These positions are vital for the day-to-day functioning of various labs and centres. To be eligible for a Technical Assistant post, candidates generally require a first-class Diploma in a relevant engineering discipline from a recognized institution. Common specializations include Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, and Civil engineering. In some cases, a B.Sc. degree in a relevant science field might also be the required qualification. The age limit for Technical Assistants is often higher than for scientists, typically set around 35 years, providing an opportunity for a broader range of candidates.
Skilled Trades and Technicians
The intricate work of building and maintaining space hardware requires a dedicated team of skilled trades professionals. These roles, such as Technician 'B' and Draughtsman 'B', are essential for manufacturing, assembly, and testing. The primary qualification for these posts is typically a pass in SSLC/SSC (10th standard) along with an ITI/NTC/NAC certificate in a specific trade from an NCVT-recognized institution. The trades in demand often include Fitter, Electronic Mechanic, and Draughtsman (Mechanical). The selection process for technicians usually involves a written test followed by a skill test, which is qualifying in nature. The written test assesses theoretical knowledge, while the skill test evaluates practical, hands-on ability.
Administrative and Clerical Posts
A large organisation like ISRO also needs a robust administrative framework to function smoothly. This includes roles like Assistant, Upper Division Clerk (UDC), Junior Personal Assistant (JPA), and Stenographer. For positions like Assistant and UDC, the typical requirement is a Graduation degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.32. Additionally, proficiency in computer usage is almost always a mandatory skill. For JPA and Stenographer roles, besides the graduation degree, candidates must demonstrate stenography skills, usually with a minimum specified speed in English shorthand. These posts often have a written test and a subsequent skill test as part of the selection process.
Age Criteria and Relaxations
Across all roles, there are specific age limits that candidates must adhere to. The general upper age limit is often 28 years for Scientist/Engineer and administrative posts, and 35 years for technical assistant roles. However, the Government of India's reservation policies provide for significant age relaxations. Typically, there is a relaxation of up to 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 3 years for OBC candidates for posts reserved for them. Additional age relaxations are also applicable for Ex-Servicemen and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) as per government orders. It is crucial for applicants to check the specific cut-off date for age calculation mentioned in each official notification.
