What is Food Safety Connect?
Food Safety Connect is the official platform from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for consumers to lodge grievances. Available as both a mobile app and a web portal, its goal is to create a responsive system for addressing food
safety violations. Think of it as a direct line to the authorities for issues like food adulteration, unhygienic restaurant kitchens, expired products, or false advertising on packaging. The FSSAI is actively encouraging citizens to act as the 'eyes' of the regulator by using this platform to report problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. Beyond just filing complaints, the app also lets you verify the FSSAI license of any food business and access official food safety advisories.
How to File a Complaint: A Step-by-Step Guide
Using the platform is designed to be straightforward. First, download the 'Food Safety Connect' app or visit the FSSAI's consumer grievance website. You will need to register with your mobile number or email ID to create an account. Once logged in, select the option to 'Lodge New Complaint'. The system will then prompt you to provide details about the food business operator in question, including their name and address. If you have it, entering their 14-digit FSSAI license number (often displayed on the premises or packaging) can significantly speed things up. Next, you'll choose the category of your complaint from a list of predefined issues, such as 'poor hygiene', 'expired food', or 'misleading claims'. Describe the issue clearly in the space provided before moving on to the most important step.
Why Your Evidence is Everything
A complaint without proof is just an allegation. To turn your grievance into an actionable case, you must provide solid evidence. The portal allows you to upload supporting documents, and you should take full advantage of this feature. The most effective forms of evidence include clear photographs or videos of the issue, whether it's an unhygienic kitchen, a pest in your food, or an expired date on a package. Just as important is a picture of the bill or receipt, which proves your purchase and links the product to the specific vendor. Also, be sure to keep the original packaging if the complaint relates to a packaged good. Without this documentation, it is difficult for authorities to verify your claim and take concrete action.
Tracking Your Complaint and Escalating It
After you submit your grievance, the system will generate a unique tracking ID. This number is your key to monitoring the progress of your case. You can log back into the portal at any time and use this ID to see the live status of your complaint as it is forwarded to the relevant food safety authority for investigation. The official process involves forwarding the complaint to the concerned business or state-level food safety officer for resolution. If you feel the response is inadequate or if your issue isn't resolved to your satisfaction, the platform includes a 'Re-Raise Complaint' option, which allows you to escalate the matter to a higher authority within the FSSAI system.
Does It Actually Lead to Action?
While the effectiveness of any public grievance system can vary, there is evidence that complaints lodged through Food Safety Connect are leading to real-world consequences. In recent weeks, the FSSAI has intensified its enforcement measures, partly driven by public participation. The regulator has issued notices to major companies, including quick-commerce platform Swiggy Instamart, following consumer complaints about contaminated and spoiled food products submitted through the app. Other actions have been taken against businesses for misleading advertising claims like '100% natural'. These examples show that a well-documented complaint is not just a shout into the void; it can be a powerful catalyst for regulatory action and help improve food safety standards for everyone.
