A New Kind of Moonwalk
The iconic images of Apollo astronauts bunny-hopping across the lunar surface are a testament to the limitations of 1960s technology. Those suits were groundbreaking for their time but were stiff and cumbersome. For the Artemis program, which aims to establish
a sustainable human presence on the Moon, NASA required a suit that allows for a much greater range of motion. Astronauts need to be able to walk naturally, kneel to collect rock samples, and navigate treacherous, permanently shadowed craters where temperatures can plummet. The destination for the upcoming Artemis III mission is the Moon's south pole, a region believed to hold water ice but also presenting extreme challenges with its deep craters and long, dark shadows.
Introducing the AxEMU Spacesuit
Developed by Axiom Space, the new Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) is a personalized spacecraft designed to function as a home away from home. Building on NASA's own prototype designs, the AxEMU is engineered for flexibility and safety. A key innovation is its rear-entry hatch, which allows astronauts to climb into the suit from the back. This design, similar to Russian Orlan suits, is not only easier to get into but also reduces the risk of shoulder injuries common with older suit designs that required wiggling into separate upper and lower torsos. This single-piece design also allows for a more tailored and ergonomic fit.
Mobility Is the Mission
The defining feature of the new suit is its advanced mobility. Using a system of innovative soft and hard joints and bearings in the arms and legs, the AxEMU will allow astronauts to move much more like they would on Earth. This means they can bend, squat, kneel, and twist their torso in ways the Apollo astronauts could only dream of. This flexibility is crucial for conducting complex scientific work, such as gathering geological samples from the ground without falling over. The clumsy waddle of the past has been engineered out, replaced by a suit that enables a more natural walking gait, essential for traversing the uneven and unpredictable terrain of the lunar south pole.
High-Tech Features for a Harsh Environment
Beyond mobility, the AxEMU incorporates a suite of modern technologies. The helmet features integrated HD cameras to stream a clear point-of-view back to Mission Control, along with a powerful lighting system to illuminate the darkness of permanently shadowed craters. To address a major hurdle from past programs, the suit is highly adjustable and designed to fit a much wider range of body types, accommodating at least 90 percent of the U.S. male and female population. The outer layers, developed in partnership with Italian fashion house Prada, are not just for looks; they provide crucial protection from the Moon's abrasive dust and extreme temperature swings. This robust protection is being rigorously tested in vacuum chambers and simulated lunar environments on Earth to ensure astronaut safety.
