To understand why humidity makes us feel so hot, we first need to look at how our bodies stay cool. Humans have a built-in, highly effective cooling system: sweating. When our internal temperature rises, our brains signal millions of sweat glands to release
sweat onto the skin. The magic, however, isn't in the sweating itself, but in its evaporation. As the sweat evaporates from our skin into the air, it takes a significant amount of heat with it, a process known as evaporative cooling. The monsoon season is characterised by high relative humidity, meaning the air is already saturated with a large amount of water vapour. Imagine the air is a sponge that's already nearly full. When your body tries to cool itself by sweating, the high humidity in the monsoon air slows down the rate of evaporation significantly. Since the surrounding air can't absorb much more moisture, your sweat simply stays on your skin, unable to evaporate and provide that crucial cooling effect. This is why you feel sticky and clammy. The Heat Index combines the actual air temperature with the relative humidity to provide a more accurate measure of how hot it feels to the human body.
