A Major Overhaul of the Reservation System
Indian Railways has begun rolling out a major upgrade to its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) this August. After nearly four decades, the legacy system is being replaced with a modern, cloud-based platform. This is not just a minor tweak; it's a complete
overhaul designed to handle the massive demand of a digitised India, where nearly 89% of all reserved tickets are now booked online. For passengers, this promises a much faster and more reliable booking experience. The new system is built to handle up to 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly fivefold increase from the previous capacity of 32,000. It can also manage over 40 lakh passenger enquiries per minute, a 10x jump that should reduce website crashes and slowdowns during peak hours.
Smarter Bookings and Less Tatkal Stress
One of the most significant passenger-facing features of the new PRS is the integration of AI-powered tools. The system now includes an AI-based waitlist prediction feature, which offers a more accurate estimate of the probability of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed. This helps travellers make more informed decisions instead of booking in uncertainty. Furthermore, the increased capacity of the new system is expected to make the high-stress Tatkal booking process much smoother. With the platform now better equipped to handle the simultaneous traffic spikes during Tatkal hours, passengers should experience fewer crashes and faster transaction times. The new IRCTC beta website, which went live on July 15, has already shown improvements in booking speeds.
New Token System for Tatkal Counter Bookings
For those who book Tatkal tickets at physical reservation counters, a new token-based system was introduced from August 1, 2026, to streamline the process. Instead of queuing twice, passengers can now collect a numbered token and wait for their turn. This change aims to reduce overcrowding and make the experience more orderly. There are specific time windows for token distribution: 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM for AC classes and 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM for non-AC classes. The system also prioritises passengers booking for themselves or their immediate family (Category A) over others (Category B).
Check for Special Onam Festival Trains
With the Onam festival approaching (Thiruvonam on August 26), Indian Railways has announced 112 special train services to manage the festive rush, nearly doubling last year's number. These services will primarily operate between August 14 and September 6, 2026, connecting Kerala with major cities in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal. These trains will service high-demand corridors to and from cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, and Hyderabad, providing much-needed capacity for those travelling home for the festival. Passengers are advised to check the IRCTC platform for availability and book their tickets early to avoid last-minute hassles.
New Rules for Luggage and Ticketless Travel
Recent updates have also focused on discipline and passenger compliance. As of early August 2026, passengers can now declare and pay for excess luggage online through the IRCTC platform, a move that helps avoid queues at parcel offices. It's a good time to remember the free allowance limits: 70 kg for AC First Class, 50 kg for AC 2-Tier, and 40 kg for Sleeper Class, with charges applicable for anything extra. Additionally, penalties for rule violations have become stricter. Under the recently effective Jan Vishwas Act, the minimum fine for travelling without a valid ticket has reportedly been increased to curb ticketless travel and ensure a better experience for all authorised passengers.
