The Cross-Country Craving Answered
The idea of ordering a meal from a city hundreds of kilometres away has officially moved from fantasy to reality. For years, food delivery was a hyperlocal affair, limited to restaurants within a few kilometres of your location. Now, driven by a love
for authentic, regional cuisine, a new service model is bridging the geographical gap. Major players like Zomato, along with specialised platforms such as Hungersate, are pioneering this space, allowing you to order iconic dishes from legendary eateries in other cities and have them delivered to your doorstep. This service, often called 'Intercity Legends' by Zomato, lets you access famous foods like Lucknow's kebabs, Jaipur's pyaaz kachori, or Bengaluru's Mysore Pak, no matter where you live.
The Logistics of a Long-Distance Meal
So, how does a hot biryani travel across the country and arrive fresh? The process is a marvel of logistics. When you place an order, the restaurant prepares the food fresh. It is then packed in specialised, tamper-proof, and often temperature-controlled or refrigerated containers. From there, the package is transported, typically by air, to your city overnight. The services use commercial flights to move the food parcels quickly. Once it lands, a local delivery partner picks it up and brings it to your home. The food arrives chilled, not frozen, with instructions to simply reheat it by microwaving, air-frying, or pan-frying. This entire chain ensures that the meal retains its flavour and texture without the need for preservatives.
What’s on the Menu and What’s the Catch?
While the possibilities are exciting, the service isn't without its limitations. You can't order just anything. The menus are curated, featuring iconic and durable dishes that travel well. Think items like biryanis, kebabs, and certain sweets that can withstand the journey. This is not your typical 30-minute delivery; orders are typically delivered the next day. For instance, on Zomato's revamped 'Legends' service, orders placed before 7 p.m. are delivered the following day. There's also the cost. Zomato recently reintroduced its service with a minimum order value of ₹5,000, positioning it as a premium option for special occasions or large family meals rather than a casual dinner. This is a significant change from its earlier iteration which had no minimum order value, a shift designed to make the complex logistics more sustainable.
The Evolution of Intercity Delivery
The concept has been through some trial and error. Zomato initially launched Intercity Legends in 2022, but briefly paused the service in April 2024 after it was discovered that the platform was pre-stocking some popular dishes to enable same-day delivery. This raised concerns about freshness. The relaunched 'Legends' service has addressed this by ensuring all dishes are prepared fresh to order and shipped directly from the partner restaurant. This pivot prioritises food quality and authenticity over delivery speed. Other specialised services like Hungersate also emphasise their commitment to freshness, using temperature tracking and sourcing directly from iconic restaurants to maintain quality over long distances.
Is It Worth the Hype and Price?
Ultimately, whether this service is for you depends on what you value. For food enthusiasts desperate to taste a specific dish from its city of origin, it's a game-changer. It offers a unique way to celebrate a special occasion or satisfy a deep-seated craving. It connects people with the authentic tastes of India, making the country's vast culinary landscape more accessible than ever. However, for the average weeknight meal, the cost and wait time will likely be prohibitive for many. It’s a luxury service that offers novelty and authenticity at a premium price. While it might not replace your local takeaway, it represents an exciting new frontier in how we experience food, proving that in today's connected world, even a single meal can be a well-travelled adventurer.
