Searches for 'grain-free pet food' have surged, and the demand for wet food and wellness supplements is rising fast. This premiumization of nutrition means new owners are faced with a dizzying array of choices, each claiming to offer better health outcomes. While specialized diets can be beneficial, they come at a cost. A monthly food bill for a medium-sized dog can range from ₹3,000 to ₹7,000, with premium or prescription diets pushing it even higher. The premium economy extends well beyond food and health. Professional grooming, once a luxury, is becoming a regular expense, with sessions costing between ₹1,000 and ₹3,000 depending on the breed. Similarly, early socialization and training are now seen as essential, with obedience courses costing ₹5,000 or more. The market also caters to the lifestyle of the urban pet parent, with a growing number of dog walkers, pet-sitting services, and even luxury boarding facilities charging upwards of ₹700 per day. These services are particularly crucial in urban settings with smaller living spaces and for owners with demanding work schedules. For first-timers, this means the budget for a pet must now account for a suite of services designed to ensure the animal's physical and mental well-being.
The Challenge for First-Time Owners
While the premium market offers unprecedented tools for excellent pet care, it also presents challenges. The sheer volume of choices can be overwhelming, and the costs are substantial.
