Finding a Place to Rent
In major Indian cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi, a new trend is emerging among landlords and property management companies: checking a potential tenant's credit score. It's becoming a key part of the tenant screening process, especially for premium
properties. The logic is simple from a landlord's perspective: a person with a history of missed payments on loans or credit cards might also be a risk for paying rent on time. While it's legal for landlords to ask for your credit report with your consent, a low score—typically below 700—could lead to your application being rejected or facing demands for a much higher security deposit. A strong credit score, on the other hand, gives you more negotiating power and a smoother path to securing your desired home.
Landing Your Dream Job
Your credit history can also play a role in your career, particularly in certain sectors. While not a universal practice, many companies in the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) industries now include a CIBIL check as part of their background verification for new hires. This is especially common for roles that involve financial responsibility, handling company money, or accessing sensitive data. Employers in these fields view a good credit report as an indicator of a candidate's integrity and financial discipline. A poor credit history might be seen as a potential risk, potentially affecting your chances of getting hired for jobs that require a high level of trust and responsibility.
Getting Better Insurance Premiums
One of the most surprising areas your credit score has an impact is on your insurance premiums. While its influence is still growing in India, some insurance providers for motor and health policies have started to use credit scores to assess risk. The reasoning is that individuals with a history of responsible financial behaviour are seen as statistically less likely to file exaggerated or fraudulent claims. As a reward for this perceived reliability, insurers may offer lower premiums to customers with a high credit score, often considered to be 750 or above. This could translate into significant savings on your annual insurance costs, making a good credit score valuable well beyond borrowing.
Applying for a Postpaid Connection
Even telecom companies are taking an interest in your financial habits. When you apply for a new postpaid mobile connection or a premium plan, providers may use your CIBIL score to set credit limits for your monthly bill. A strong score signals to the provider that you are a reliable customer who is likely to pay their bills on time. This can result in a higher credit limit, giving you more flexibility and uninterrupted service. Conversely, a weaker score might lead to a lower initial credit limit or a request for a security deposit before activating the service. It’s another small but significant way your credit history shapes the services you can access.
