Why Choose Traditional Coolers?
In the quest for hydration, it is easy to reach for a packaged drink. However, homemade coolers made from ingredients like kokum, mint, and cumin offer a superior alternative. These natural ingredients have been used in Indian households and Ayurvedic
practices for centuries, primarily for their ability to cool the body and aid digestion. Unlike commercial beverages that can be loaded with processed sugars and artificial additives, these drinks provide genuine refreshment and functional benefits, helping you feel revitalized from the inside out.
The Tangy Kokum Cooler
Kokum, a fruit native to India’s western coast, is a summer superstar. Its dried rind, when soaked, releases a beautiful ruby-red hue and a unique tangy flavour. Traditionally, kokum is celebrated for its cooling properties and is often used to soothe acidity and indigestion. It is rich in antioxidants and contains compounds that may help protect the body from dehydration and heat stroke. This makes a glass of Kokum Sherbet more than just a tasty drink; it's a restorative elixir perfect for sweltering afternoons.
How to Make a Refreshing Kokum Cooler
This recipe creates a delightful sweet and sour cooler with a hint of spice. You can use either dried kokum rinds or ready-made kokum syrup. Ingredients: - 10-12 pieces of dried kokum (amsul) - 4 glasses of chilled water - 4 to 5 tablespoons of sugar or jaggery, adjusted to taste - 1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder - 1/4 teaspoon black salt (kala namak) - A pinch of black pepper powder (optional) Instructions: 1. Soak the dried kokum in one cup of warm water for about 2 to 3 hours, or until they become soft. 2. Mash the soaked kokum with your hands to extract all the pulp and flavour into the water. The water will turn a deep red. 3. Strain this concentrated liquid into a large jug, pressing the pulp against the sieve to get as much extract as possible. Discard the leftover rinds. 4. Add the remaining chilled water, sugar or jaggery, roasted cumin powder, and black salt to the jug. 5. Stir vigorously until the sugar or jaggery is completely dissolved. Taste and adjust the sweetness or saltiness if needed. 6. Pour into glasses filled with ice and serve immediately. For extra freshness, you can garnish with a few mint leaves.
The Energizing Mint Cumin Drink (Jaljeera)
Jaljeera, which translates to 'cumin water', is a popular North Indian beverage known for its zesty, savory, and incredibly refreshing taste. The two hero ingredients, mint and cumin, are a powerhouse combination. Mint is a natural coolant that can relieve indigestion, while cumin is known to have antibacterial properties and aids in digestion. Together, with a blend of other spices, they create a drink that instantly perks you up, replenishes lost salts, and prepares your digestive system for a meal.
